PC very slow

  I am using XP and for a long time now my computer has been getting steadily slower I regularly get (Not responding) in the tytle bar? at the top of the screen irrespective of being on-line or not and I'm pulling a lot of hair out!! A friend in the US sugests I do not have enough memory, will that be RAM?
