Failure to purchase new activation key RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

My Dell laptop came with Vista Basic preinstalled and due to a recent crash of my desktop, I installed Vista on the desktop as well.  Everything was working until earlier this morning (Vista has been installed for about 2 weeks) - upon logging in to my desktop it won't let me sign in past the log in screen and says my key is invalid.  Upon looking into this further, I now realize that I am not allowed to install Vista in this manner.  I have been attempting to purchase a new license so I can access my desktop without reformatting the harddrive and installing a newly purchased copy of Vista.  When I attempt to do this online, I enter the product key on this website:

After clicking "submit" I am taken to the following page:

Which re-links me to the previous page and gives me a telephone number.  Upon speaking with an operator she noted that she received an error message after typing in my product key.

Is the system currently down?  I need to access my desktop as soon as possible and a solution to obtain another activation key would be greatly appreciated.

  • In order to resolve your dilemma, you'll need to purchase a "full version" of Windows Vista Basic and then proceed with a "clean install".  Microsoft does not offer additional OEM product keys, only "retail" product keys.
