wrong product key on xp professional upgrade cd RRS feed

  • I bought in another country an upgrade to Windows XP Professional but cannot proceed because the installation software says that the product key is wrong!!!
    How can I do without throwing out the window everything since I cannot fly back and fight with the seller?

    Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.

    my laptop has installed Windows xp media center edition, below you can read in black letter TOSHIBA but the problem is with a windows xp professional  

    that i bought in New York. When I try to do the upgrade the product key written on the yellow label on the back of the product is wrong!

    I bought in a CompUSA shop, look like 100% Microsoft original but has the wrong product key.

    Pls let me know how to solve the problem. Is there any system to change it or to have a new CD?

    Looking at the last item in this MS KB article, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292607, XP MCE is on the supported upgrade path list, but the article says that when you try to upgrade you get the error message you were getting, incorrect product key.

     

    The article has no info on how to over come the problem, so I would suggest contact Microsoft tech support in your country http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx and then submit a request for installation/setup tech support.  Installation support for Windows XP Pro is Unlimited No Charge support by toll free phone.  (Here is the USA phone number in case you need it: (866) 234-6020)
