  • Question

  • Hi, I am aware that the two exams (70-271 and 70-272) that are needed to be a Microsoft Certified Desktop Technician was retired on June 30, 2011. I'm a senior Information Technology student who will be graduating in four months who is interested in pursuing a career as a Microsoft Certified Professional. I was planning on starting my MCP Career with the MCDST Certification, but because the exam is already retired, I have two questions for you guys, in hopes you can help me decide my future as a MCP.

1.) I still want to be a Microsoft Certified Desktop Technician, does/will Microsoft stiff offer this certification in the future? If yes, are there already exams that I need to prepare for?

    and..

2.) If there is no more MCDST certification in the near future, what is the best certification I should take after I finish college? The path I'm considering on going for is either MCSA or MCITP.

    Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • 1) No this certification won't be available in the future.

    2) I would go on the MCITP path (as it relates to newer technology)

  • It really depends on what experience you have.  Take a look at the following to get an idea http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/mcitp.aspx#tab2

  • Hi,

just want to add few things about what Jeff Wharton said, You may take MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician on Windows 7 certification. You have to pass 70-680 and 70-685 exam to get this certification. You may visit this link to get more details:

  • Orayt, so let's say I passed the exams for Enterprise Desktop Support Technician on Windows 7 certification, after that, and if I decided to take up, let's say,  Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008. That's ok right? I can take that exam even though I already passed the desktop support technician certification.

  • Yes, you can take the exams required for that certification, like if you want to get  Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 certification, you have to pass 70-640, 70-642, and 70-646 exams. If you have already passed any exam required for your next certification, you don't have to pass that exam again. You can check the Microsoft website to get more details regarding this.

    Thanks!

  • What if you took and passed the MCDST? What are the upgrades for this and the old 70-290 exams? Do I now lose all of the credit for having passed these exams? Please advise, I am so confused as to what the smoke is going on

  • Congratulations on earning you MCDST certification and 70-290. You keep those passed exams for life.

One exam will allow you to upgrade your MCDST from Windows XP to Windows 7.

Check out this UPGRADE exam: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam.aspx?ID=70-682

    Good luck!
