Windows Vista Home Premium no longer genuine on my Dell Laptop?

  • Hi Microsoft,

    My Dell laptop, after 4 years, is suddenly telling me that "This copy of Windows is not genuine".   Not sure what the problem is as I have not made any hardware/software changes to the laptop recently (I do run windows update & Microsoft Security Essentials).    By the way, after reading through this forum, I have tried to solve this via the MS Volume Licensing Activation Center but no luck (still would not activate after entering all those digits I received from the tech suppport).    Anyway, here's the diagnostic report:

    here's the correct set!

    The problem appears to be in the Licensing Store - please try the following.....

    Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice. 

    You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).  

    Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

  • There may be a problem with the licnesing store....

    Please first try recreating the Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store
    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.
    If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the WIndows 7 COA sticker on the machine's case

    Reboot and then attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate

    Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • Thanks for the prompt response!   I've tried to recreate the licensing store per your instructions.   However, on step 4 (net stop sppsvc) I get an error: "System error 1060 has occurred.  The specified service does not exist as an installed service".    Should I ignore this error and continue with step 5?

  • OK, was able to follow your instructions above and everything seemed to re-create successfully.   Restarted the laptop twice and got the "Windows Activation" screen which asked me to enter in my Vista Home Premium product key.  After entering the product key I get a "This copy of Windows is not genuine" screen with an option to "Go online and resolve now".   Which I did - and it worked!  Yeah!   THANK YOU!!  

    A couple of questions though:  any idea what could cause a problem with my laptop's licensing store?  And if the problem re-occurs should I follow the same procedure you provided?
