Prod Key used by Dell and Product Key on MS Sticker under the battery - WGA failure

Question
-
The product code that was used by Dell is different than the one on the official sticker on the actual on the laptop running Vista. I received an error message 'Invalid Vista Prod Key' and then click on 'Enter a different Prod Key' then I entered the prod key on the laptop MS sticker and still receive the same 'invalid' message. What can I do to correct this problem? I don't feel I should have to pay for Windows 7 when I already paid Dell for Vista. Thank you, KarenMonday, July 5, 2010 5:45 PM

My daughter was instructed online to purchase the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Visata. Once I was able to call that CS directly due to that purchase, I found out that all I needed to do was to 'Activate' the Windows Vista that was factory loaded on the LT from Dell. Once the CS walked me through that, all was well. I will return the 'Kit' and she will get her money back. What a mess!!!!

Please follow the instructions at the top of the forum about running MsDiag and posting your report in a follow-up post.Monday, July 5, 2010 6:21 PM -
A product key for Windows Vista cannot be used with Windows 7. The Windows Vista product key affixed to your Dell laptop signifies the installation of a genuine edition of Windows Vista. It is not the same Windows Vista product key used by Dell to install their master Windows Vista image at the factory.
If you wish to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7, you will need to purchase a genuine edition of Windows 7 which is available from the Microsoft Store.

Carey,
Thank you for your reply...I know that the prod codes are not interchangeable. Apparently Dell used a master code for Windows Vista (this laptop was ordered directly from Dell.com). My daughter didn't know to click 'no' on the nag message for Windows Genuine Advantage; so it was downloaded and immediately determined that the prod code (used by Dell #####-OEM,etc) was not valid but when I click on the 'Enter another Prod Code' and use the one on the authentic sticker on the bottom of the laptop, it also rejects that one as invalid. I cannot find why MS will not accept the actual prod code.
Dell CS says the warranty is out and will not talk to me without renewing for ~$200.00.
I have tried all of the online tips and tricks to no avail. Didn't find the WGAtray, or dll file. Did find the Mozilla Fozfire Plugin and deleted but that did fix it either. I can only start the laptop in Safe Mode without internet access. A real PITA!!!
Any help is appreciated. I'll try to run the diagnostic tomorrow when I take the LT back to my daughters' house. If I can't access the online file, what info are you looking for?

If you run the MGADiag Tool, you can copy the output into a Notepad file by hitting the Copy button, and then pasting into an open Notepad window - then you can either paste it into a direct reposne in the forum, or copy the file to a USB drive, and take it home, then copy/paste the whole thing back here.

What i have done to work around my problem is to restore back to the date before the first Windows Genuine Advantage and Invalid error. I now wait until the 'Activate Now' clock runs out and choose 'Activate Later'. Windows does load but a small message on the lower right hand of screen informs me This copy of Windows is Genuine.
Upon searching I do not find any of the following: wgatray or wgatray.exe, dllcache or dllcache.exe. Upon checking via 'regedit' I do not find the folder Wgalogon. I have downloaded WGANotifyRemover and upon execution it informs me that WGA is not loaded.
My question now is - apparently Windows was never activated online (the LT is about two yrs old) so should I change the Prod Id through system maint to the prod key that is on the sticker on the back of the LT and then try to activate it?
An identical LT was purchased online from Dell at the same time that doesn't have any of these problems....hmmmm
Thanks for all help!

Machines delivered from large manufacturers use an OEM-SLP system of self-activation, rather han activation over the internet. They in effect swap security certificates ith teh BIOS on the computer to ensure that the software isinstalled ony on the machine for which it is licensed. Sometimes, this system breaks down (perhaps because of a BIOS update, oor other reasons), and the system then allows the use of the COA Sticker key instead of the manufacturer's Key.
Assuming that the machine properly self-activates after a couple of reboot, you should be good to go - but to be sure, it'd still be a good idea to post a copy of the MGADiag report. This will tell us
1) that the machine is activated properly
2) that all relevant Software licensing files are present and correct - because if they aren't then you WILL get Non-Genuine messages again.
3) that the software is genuine - a number of people have found that their machines have been reinstalled by thrid-party repairers with non-genuine versions of Windows and/or Office..

Noel,
What I meant to say: What i have done to work around my problem is to restore back to the date before the first Windows Genuine Advantage and Invalid error. I now wait until the 'Activate Now' clock runs out and choose 'Activate Later'. Windows does load but a small message on the lower right hand of screen informs me This copy of Windows is NOT Genuine.
I will run the MGADiag and post it tomorrow. I know for a fact there has been no reinstalling or repairs done so hopefully this will be easy to resolve.
Thank you again for all you advice; hope to chat w u then.

Okay...I just ran the MSDiag and recieved a Validation Status: Invalid License, Code:50. The product key is the one on the sticker, not the OEM key. When I tried to copy the results I recvd 'Failed to create output files, hr=ox8007000d. Contact Support.
I also found that both of the laptops were factory installed with the same OEM key. Why am I not having the same problem with the other LT?
My daughter purchased the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Vista for ~$60.00. It has not been installed and I am very upset that she had to buy this software when each LT has a Windows Unique Key on the Windows sticker.
Why???

Hello mimi32223,
The error "failed to create output files" occasionally comes up, but funny thing, you can still copy and paste the report into your thread here.
Not sure why daughter decided to buy the WGA Kit while you are in the middle of working on the problem???

Please contact Dell Support and order the correct Dell Backup Recovery Discs designed for your specific Dell computers, then perform a complete "clean install" of the Windows operating system.

This is precisely why I asked for a copy of the MGADiag report - had we had that earlier, it would have pointed to the 'quick=fix' solution. The fact that you were unable to provide the report made troubleshooting very difficult.WRT your email address - I suggest that you remove it, as it will get spammed to heck-and-gone, if it remains visible. Your phone number likewise!
