OneNote Pages disappear RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have OneNote sections synching between 3 computers via Live Mesh.  I don't have any other synching active other than what is configured on a vanilla install of OneNote.  Many times, I create a new page and enter information.  Sometime later, the page disappears.  Yes, disappears.  One time about 45 minutes (guessing) later, the page reappears.  I do have at least two of the machines running and logged in but only one has OneNote open.  I've created new pages using OneNote 2007 with latest Service packs.  I've also seen this on OneNote 2010 beta so I don't think it is OneNote.

My news list shows the same section or onenote file synching twice in 2 minutes.  Not sure if that is part of the problem.

  • I think that your issue is actually a function of the way that OneNote works and how Live Mesh deals with files that are in conflict. Personally, I'd avoid synchronizing OneNote files. What I have done is place my OneNote files on a server on my LAN and shared it to my PCs. Whenever the PCs travel, they cannot update, but OneNote handles the sync of data upon return to home.
Ideally, we can have a cloud based service for hosting OneNote files. I seem to recall that this is planned for Office 2010, using Office Live or something similar, though it is not yet available in the current beta.

  • It appears I have multiple versions of the same onenote file on the Live Desktop and OneNote switches between them so it appears like the page is deleted.  Or Live Mesh synchs the "other" copy down and OneNote displays it.  This explains why it comes back later.  I noticed that the "duplicates" were the same date as the last OneNote synch.  I've disabled OneNote synching by setting my client to work offline.

I believe Live Mesh needs to deal with duplicates or multiple versions of the same file on the Live Desktop better.
