Social distance in Microsoft forums RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

Is there a feature within forums to maintain a list with users whom threads I would like to inspect? And also to get notified when there are new threads, or changes?

I would like to maintain a list of all of my colleagues and co-workers. Would be great if the forum would be able to do this automatically based on social distance, using LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, and other social data (importing it from your SharePoint user profile?).

    Regards, Carl

  • Hi Carl,

The only way I know of to do this is to watch the RSS feed of individual users (and I've never actually done this myself, so I'm not sure how effective it is). You can get to that feed by viewing a user's profile and clicking the RSS link next to the Activity tab.

  • What is the proper procedure to get an official statement from the Microsoft forums personnel?

I really would like to get this 'Threads sorted by social distance' feature into the product.

My hypothesis is that people are more eager to answer questions from people who are socially closer to them.

You can wait to see if anyone responds to this question, that's about the best you can do.

I'm certainly not. I try help anyone I can. If you're looking for a more 'social' feel, you may want to check out the community forums over on the Answers site:

I doubt they have this social distance feature you're looking for, but those forums are certainly friendlier than these (in my experience, at least).

EDIT: Also, since we can't even get a decent search tool here after multiple requests, I believe that it's very unlikely that they're going to start working on social connections. Just my opinion.

Don't expect to get an answer from the forum team.

The forum team is just three steps above Steve Ballmer at the Redmond mountain.
