A communications error ocurred. MS Money UK RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am unable to import downloaded OFX files into Money14 UK version from any source. Even files which I have previously imported are rejected with the "A communications error occurred" msgbox (see picture on link).

I have been running this version with patch on my Windows 8 machine since March 2013 and successfully "opening" OFX files from a range of sources since then. However when the stock update stopped I tried to import a file from the FT via the HLE utility.  I think that I failed to set the currency to GBP and my problem started.

I have now successfully imported the HLE generated OFX file into a test.mny file, but unfortunately I've over written my "good" money.mny and .mbf files with auto back-up on file close. So I really need to correct the problem in the file.

The symptoms sound similar to those described and cured in the KB article (see link) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910214 but the solution is only described for Sunset and I can't translate them into Money 14. Can anybody help?

    Thanks. Phil

  • BTW .QIF files seem to be unaffected by this and import OK.

That KB article relates to all Money versions between 2002 and Money Plus (see the "Applies to" in the properties section).

Therefore, you should be able to re-associate the filetype using the instructions provided.

  • Hi Ashley. I don't think it is a file type problem as the MS Money Loader grabs the files.  It seems to be that something inside the OFX files is disagreeing with something in one of my accounts. So I'm trying to force OFX data somewher eit doesn't want to go. I think I'm somewhere between Method 2 and 3 as described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910214. Any ideas on what to look for in either places to see if there is a mismatch? Thanks

Is it Money giving you the error message? If so, the file association was not the problem.

You have the *.ofx file available? See if there is a <SEVERITY>ERROR in your OFX file. You can look at that file with a text editor, such as Notepad. Sometimes the files have newlines in them, and sometimes they are mostly run together.

  • Is the *.ofx file in question generated by hleofxquotes tool? If yes, can you send me a copy at hleofxquotes at gmail dot com.

One common cause that would lead to what you are seeing: the *.ofx file has unescapted ampersand character. Take a quick look at the *.ofx file, does it have '&' character in it?
