  • OK, I installed the proper add-ons and now have a passing on all categories.  I then went to the link to Validate Windows and it shows valid.  I then went back to Security Essentials and hit "run a validation check" and it still shows invalid.  Below is my newest Diagnostic Data:

I can see no issues present in your report - please try Validation manually
Validation should happen automatically, and you should be offered MSE (again!)
If it fails, you should be offered the Diagnostics tool
which should help troubleshoot your problem (if any)
once the Diagnostics show 'all green', try validation again.

Run a new MGADiag report, and post the results.

  • Here are the results from my Diagnostics.  Still not validating. I have uninstalled and re-installed.  The Windows website says I have a valid license.  The window is staying on this report and not moving to a resolution page.

  • OK, I installed the proper add-ons and now have a passing on all categories.  I then went to the link to Validate Windows and it shows valid.  I then went back to Security Essentials and hit "run a validation check" and it still shows invalid.  Below is my newest Diagnostic Data:

  • OK,

Now I just downloaded Avast and installed.  The software did a full scan on my computer and the Security Essentials began to update and became certified to run.  I then didn't want Avast so I uninstalled it and as soon as I did, the Windows issue came up again.  So..I downloaded Avast again, which allowed Security Essentials to work again and am currently doing a full scan using Security Essentials.

Does anyone envision a problem running both software packages?

    Oh YES!
You'll have massive problems if you run two resident scanners :(
I think I have an idea what may have happened....
What other security software has EVER been installed on that machine? - include any AV installed by the manufacturer, but never used - even if uninstalled.
Please Uninstall Avast, and run its removal tool
Then run the removal tools for any other anti-virus you've had installed.
    etc.. etc..
reboot, and see if that helps
if not, uninstall and reinstall MSE - see if that cures it.

  • I have completed removing ALL anti-virus software from my computer, including Security Essentials.  I have then re-downloaded and installed Security Essentials.  It is still not validating my Windows, which IS valid.

The clue has to be in the fact that when I run AVAST, it allows Security Essentials to work.

Why am I having this problem?

To be honest, I have no idea!
Since we've now seemingly cured the initial problem of validating Windows itself, I suggest that you try asking in the MSE support forum, where MSE specialists may have some answers for you.

    Ahah!
A little searching suggests a permissions problem - I have no idea why  installing Avast should fix it.
    may help

I have an identical issue to CBMOTO.  The Avast thing is interesting.  I tried it as well, and sure enough, it allowed MSE to show that windows is Valid.

I have came across the link that Noel posted before (about the permissions problem), and have not had luck with that.

Were you able to solve your problem CBMOTO?

    thanks

Your issue is by no means identical - and since I can see no trace of any MGADiag report in your thread, I can see no justification for your saying that it is identical.
Note, though, that I am NOT saying that the fix you found through MS support will not work for the OP - merely tat there's a very good chance that it won't.

  • I'm sorry, did i do something wrong?  if we need to get technical then sure, i don't have Office XP small business, nor do i have Vista.  and i'd be willing to bet that we don't have the same software installed on our computers - nobody would.  But the problem that the OP stated in the first thread is the same problem i had.

I have a system that was producing the same problem as the OP, and was able to fix it. I didn't say that this fix WOULD solve the OP's problem, i said that it fixed MY problem, but felt pretty coinfident that it would fix his/hers.   - which means that i think there is a very good chance that it would.

Sorry for offering some insight to solve the problem. i guess I should have never posted and left things as - "To be honest, I have no idea!" - ask Microsoft.

Please post your OWN problem to your OWN thread - and include an MGADiag report, as requested in the forum guidelines in the Ann cements.
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

  • Since you couldn't figure out how to fix the OP's problem, I was being nice by posting a fix that worked for me to solve this problem that the OP and others may have.  I guess that isn't what this forum is about... good Luck OP.

  • Hi, Assuming you have not fixed this yet, I managed to solve it on Windows XP. I see you are running Vista, but maybe the same steps apply.

    It involves giving permissions to the MsseWat.dll C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\mssewat.dll and LegitLib.dll: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\LegitLib.dll.

You have to give the Everyone group read and execute permissions to both files.

As I said, I solved the issue on XP, so it may not apply to you, but let me know if it helps.

    Follow these instructions from MS...

Thank you for your reply. I understand the system can pass the validation in the website, but Microsoft Security Essentials still shows this system as not genuine. I appreciate your time and efforts on this issue.

This issue may occur if the WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) engine does not have permission to access the data.dat file. In order to confirm this point and resolve the issue, let's refer to the following steps:

    1. Log on to the computer using an Administrator user account.
    2. Click "Start", and click "My Computer".
    3. On the "Tools" menu, click "Folder Options".
    4. Click the "View" tab.
    5. Under "Hidden files and folders", check on "Show hidden files and folders".
    6. Click to clear the "Hide extensions for known file types" check box, and then click "OK".
    7. We will find the file named "data.dat" under the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data

    8. Right-click the "data.dat" file, and click "Properties".
    9. Click the "Security" tab.

Note: If the "Security" tab cannot be viewed, please refer to the information after Step 12.

    10. Click "Advanced".

    11. In the "Name" tab, please check if "Everyone" is listed. If so, please click the "Exit" button, and check on "Full Control". If "Everyone" is not listed, please click the "Add" button, enter the name "Everyone" (without the quotation marks), press "enter "from the keyboard, choose "Full Control" in the pop-up window, and click "OK".

    12. Please click "OK" to accept the changes.

Please also check the information below regarding viewing of the Security Tab in Window XP Professional Edition.

    1. Click "Start", and click "My Computer".
    2. On the "Tools" menu, click "Folder Options".
    3. In the "View" tab, uncheck the option "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" at the bottom of the list.
    4. Click "OK".
