Cloning WHS system drive with bad sectors RRS feed

  • Question

  • WHS with a 500gb IDE system drive and 2 x 500gb SATA drives in the storage pool.  The system drive has over 300 pending bad sectors, so I want to change it out before anything goes totally wrong.

Am I right in thinking that if I clone the drive (using Acronis True Image or similar) and replace it with an identical drive with the cloned image on, I won't have solved anything because the bad sectors will have been replicated?

Just trying to avoid the time and pain of a server reinstall, repatch, reinstall a few other apps on the same drive, etc.

I have run the checkall.cmd batch file to try to heal the drive, without success.

  • For more information about the (unsupported) cloning of a Windows Home Server system drive, see this blog post on the MediasmartServer.net site. Keep in mind, however, that you already know you have a failing drive, and you may not be able to successfully clone it.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
