  • Prasanthmcsa,

Use an offline operating system such as BartPE to start the computer.  Use BartPE's file explorer to locate your valuable data files and copy them from the computer over the network or onto a flash drive.

Once the data is offloaded, restart the computer and use the manufacturer's recovery process to put a fresh installation of XP onto the computer.

Visit Windows Updates and get all the updates.

Reinstall your programs, restore your data, and you're done.

  • Prasanthmcsa,

Why and how did a cracked copy of XP get installed on this HP Desktop comptuer? Please let me know how this could have occured.  Commercial computers come preinstalled with a Windows version of software. In turn this will match the Certficate of Authenticity (COA) sticker that is required to be located on the system.

Follow the guidance Dan provided. Also in the future I would always ensure you have a currentl data backup plan established. Example create one folder on your desktop calling it Prasanthmcsa. Next create sub-folders of data you need to maintain. Next you can establish a plan as well as frequency for backing up data. There are many ways for backing up data: USB thumb drive, external hard drive, burn a CD/RW Rom, burn a DVD/RW Rom. The RW media you may use up to 1000 times but check the manufacturer of the media to ensure this information.

Please touch back with me and let know how things are going.

    Thank you,
