Backups and Defragging Clients RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I've read a bit about how the backup software checks clusters that have changed, generates a hash value and sends it to the server to verify if this cluster has already been backed up.  But this brought up an interesting question:

Would defragging a clients hard drive cause the backup software to generate a (nearly) full backup because of all the file movement that is occuring?

  • It shouldn't. A cluster is a cluster. WHS can tell that a cluster on client PC A is identical to a cluster on client PC B and store only one copy, so why would it store a new copy just because that cluster was moved on the disk?
