Vista Caller-ID Add-in for WHS

General discussion
-
Thank you to everyone who helped get me started with the Windows Home Server SDK. I have developed my first WHS Add-in and I am excited about the WHS platform as a whole.
The Add-in is a relatively simple on-demand Caller ID log file aggregator (exposing a share-point for Vista Caller-ID clients to write Caller Information). Ultimately this Caller ID history is centrally stored on the WHS Caller ID database with basic but useful features such as sort and find and of course remote access – check missed call from work or on the roadRequirements:
· Caller ID service provided by local telephone company or compatible VoIP
· Caller ID capable hardware / drivers (client PC running Vista Caller-ID)
· Windows Home Server i.e. (homebuilt or HP EX47x)
If you are interested in beta testing this WHS Add-in please verify the above requirements and use the contact page to request the developer DLL’s –alternatively I expect to have an installer ready for everyone by week’s end.

In the future I plan on re-coding the Caller ID mechanics into a Windows Service to give builders the options to include Caller ID technology directly on the server; as simple as plugging in the RJ11 phone-line or supported VoIP this will be in addition to the current distributed Caller ID history aggregation.
Looking forward to comments, questions, suggestions and the occasional bug report.

I checked out your site, that looks like quite a nifty product. My Vista PC doesnt have a modem (never thought I'd use one of those again!), but my WHS box does. Are you suggesting in your last paragraph that I could track caller-ID info just by using the WHS box alone, and not have to set up the Vista client? This would seem to make sense as technically the WHS is never off, whereas other home PC's might be off.Monday, February 25, 2008 11:24 PM

Yes, this is exactly the direction we would like to go: (in addition to the Vista client PC Vista Caller-ID log dump) to allow for system builders or anyone with a USB Modem, PCI Modem, or supported VoIP adapter to connect it to the Windows Home Server for Caller ID logging directly on the server, perhaps even distributed Caller ID alerts for all the connected clients using the provided WHS alerts
(So many possibilities) – That said, we are just learning how to walk with the WHS SDK
We have received a lot of great beta feedback, some users really are helping us move forward – it is really exciting and this forum has also been extremely helpful. - Thank you!

Does Comcast VOIP expose their Caller ID data at a VOIP ATA modem level? I will search for my RCA Comcast manual and any details when I get home and see the model number. I am using a Thomson DHG535 and while in the manual it does not mention anything about the services I am sure it is like any other eMTA and that the SIP VOIP speciifcation must specificy how Caller ID is handled.Friday, June 13, 2008 4:04 PM

Indeed, all of the major providers excluding Skype

Alexander,
Nice addition to the Add-In options we have. I look forward to using it.

I've correctly installed the Add-In and Vista Caller-ID on my client machine... fairly sure about that.
-
I successfully tested caller-ID configuration with the AT+VCID=1 command to confirm that is the command I need as shown here:
at
OK
at+vcid=1
OKRING
DATE = 0705
TIME = 0906
NMBR = 3524283719
NAME = PCS Phone FLRING
The incomming call is from my cell with correct number displayed so I know Caller-ID is configured correctly for the modem... as far as Hyperterminal is concerned.
When I use that code in Caller-ID Repair (Elevated) I get an Exception Error Message:
"Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
The result is I get no data of incomming calls in the WHS Console Page for Vista Caller-ID. I also get no data shown when I right-click and select "History" on the Vista Caller-ID on my client machine (MCE 2005) but using it just as XP Pro since media center TV feed is not connected to the client.
Is there a manual way I can configure my modem to set up caller ID since I now know the command for doing so? Or am I just not using your repair procedure correctly?
Best regards... and thanks for working with the WHS community.
George

Hi George,
Sounds like the Caller-ID Repair is looking for something that is not there!
(Although I have never tested this on MCE 2005 it should work providing one disables the already existing caller id service on Media Center 2005 machines)Most likely you need to set your telephone area code information under control panel and phone and modem options; after that Windows will add some more registry entries which the Caller-ID Repair utility should then find and patch as necessary.
Let me know if that did it, just in case my email is akent AT kentdome.com; feel free to drop me a line in case I can help you any further.

Thanks Alexander for replying. I have gotten quite a bit more done trying to resolve the issues, including editing the modem *.inf file (in my case the file is C:\hp\drivers\Modem_Conexant\Trx200Ck.inf ) but still no luck. I will email you at the address given, but it will be tomorrow before I will be back home to compose the email.
Thanks for your willingness to help. Great Idea, great Product particularly with WHS in the mix.
Best regards,
George
