webcam showing dark screen

  My webcam works fine under the settings panel (preview, etc), but when i go into a conversation, the webcam light comes on but the picture doesnt show. it works fine on online flash based programs. I've tried reinstalling the camera. It just stopped working a few days ago, so i cant seem to figure out what did it! Help!
