Some files have disappeared from Live Mesh

Question
-
I have been using Live Mesh for a couple of months with no problems. I had selected 2 particular folders on Live Mesh and had synchronised them between a Desktop i7 core with 64 bit Vista and a Sony Viao XP laptop and ofcourse the Live Desktop. This all seemed to work fine and it looked as though all the syncronised files contained all the work I had done to that point. I then went to another country where I had another Desktop with 32 bit Vista which I wanted to add to my Live Mesh network. This worked OK and after some downloading from the Live Desktop everything seemed to be in sync. However, when I check for some particular folders they were not present in the newly syncronised folders. The specific folders I was looking for contained files I had created using Expression Web 2 for a website, the usual .html, .pdf, .jpg, .css etc. Strangely enough all the other documents I had created for the website (.pdf files from Word documents) and stored in various other folders within the synchronised folders seem to be OK and all these changes showed up in the 'news' trail of changes. My first though was that for some reason the Live Mesh folders had regressed to the level of the last machine I added but the changes to the other files I created are present. Ofcourse, before I added this new machine I did not check my Live Desktop or the Laptop I had brought with me to confirm everything was as it should be! Wise after the event. Fortunately, I was able to download the site files from the server and have added then to my Live Mesh folder, as I thought I had done before. The question is, I think, is there any reason why site folders created in Expression Web cannot be synchonised or could it be something to do with how I added the last Desktop machine to Live Mesh?Friday, October 2, 2009 2:37 PM

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your response. It gave me enough information to figure out what had happened. Expression Web creates hidden folders that contain meta tags and are stored in the top level folder. As it happens I had created a folder containing a website without the hidden file meta tags which sync'd OK with the Live Desktop. As soon as I generated the hidden meta tag folders the top folder was deleted from the Live Desktop. Obviously the folder is still on my desktop machine in Malta OK and I expect all the other folders I am missing are still on my Desktop machine in France.
Live and learn.
Thanks again,

It is possible that the file types that did not sync, if I am understanding the situation correctly, are unsupported.
However, if they previously synchronized via mesh and only disappeared later, I don't know the cause and recommend a bug report with logs be filed:
How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs
Note that you probably won't get a response to the bug report, though. It will be transferred to the internal system to be assigned to the appropriate development group.
Here's the help text about file types:
http://help.live.com/Help.aspx?market=en-US&project=WL_Core&querytype=topic&query=WL_Core_REF_ExcludedFiles.htm
Are there types of files or folders that I cannot share or synchronize?
You cannot synchronize or share the following with Live Mesh:
- Files containing obscene or copyrighted material. Copying or sharing unauthorized materials, including materials that you did not create or you do not have the rights necessary for use, is a violation of the Windows Live terms of use. See the Microsoft Copyright Notice and FAQ.
- Files whose names begin with a tilde (~)
- desktop.ini
- thumbs.db
- Hidden files
- Windows Systems folders
- Your Desktop directory folder (for example, C:\users\[myusername]\Desktop on Windows Vista or C:\Documents and Settings\[myusername]\Desktop on Windows XP)
- Files and folders stored on removable media (such as an external hard drive, flash drive, or USB drive)
By default, Live Mesh also blocks files that have the following file extensions:
- .bak
- .gfs
- .lnk
- .pst
- .sav
- .tmp
- .wlx
