Answered by:
non-genuine copy of window

Question
-
I have the message in the lower right corner of my screen :This copy of windows is not genuine build 7601" My system is a Dell that I have had for over a year and the message appeared some time ago. I did purchase a new copy of windows home premium, and did a clean install after formatting my drive. The error appeared shortly after the new install. Dell blames Microsoft and Microsoft blames Dell so neither company's support division was helpful at all. I have been reading the forum and I have tried many of the solutions that I have come upon to no avail. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I have also included the diag report. Thank you for your help.

OK
it seems to be just the one entry missing, then.
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command....
sc privs sppsvc SeAuditPrivilege/SeChangeNotifyPrivilege/SeCreateGlobalPrivilege/SeImpersonatePrivilege
(should all be on one line, even if it wraps)
then close the window, reboot and run another MGADiag report.

Error: 0x5 Access denied: the requested action requires elevated privilegesI don't recall seeing that message before!
Having said that, it's likely that it's the result of a permissions error somewhere - and the trick is going to be to find out where.
First, please run some standard system checks....
Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
type in the Search boxCMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, typeCHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size
of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally
(possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFCSFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on the Start button
type in the Search boxCMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Post an MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

There were no errors from any of the commands you asked me to run. The validity was good as well (I don't remember the exact wording, I apologize), I then rebooted and ran the diagnostic.
Here is the new diagnostic report -

OK - I think the problem ies either in the registry, or in the filesystem (or both) in teh NetworkService account.
we need to find out where, and check it.
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following commands
REG QUERY HKU
REG QUERY HKU\S-1-5-20
DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming
DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft
DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
post the results...
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Hmm - looks like you've been havine problems for a while? probably started sometime in May, by the date on the tokens.dat file.
Lets look a little closer..
run the following commands and post the results.
ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\tokens.dat REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20" REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist

Oh that's right I forget the time difference. It started around then, but I was having trouble before, that is around when I reinstalled I believe. Thank you for taking time with me. I did find a small amount of non allocated money. Would you like me to send it to you via paypal or is there a charity or some other that it may benefit? Please let me know. Speak with you tomorrow.

OK
it seems to be just the one entry missing, then.
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command....
sc privs sppsvc SeAuditPrivilege/SeChangeNotifyPrivilege/SeCreateGlobalPrivilege/SeImpersonatePrivilege
(should all be on one line, even if it wraps)
then close the window, reboot and run another MGADiag report.

Thank you VERY much for your assistance. The message is gone, however the system will not print. I receive and error saying the print spooler is not running. When I try to start it via task manager or from a elevated command prompt with (net start spooler), I receive the message " Error 87: the parameter is incorrect".

That's off-ropic for this forum, I'm afraid - you should post that problem to a new thread in the Answers forums here.... (Hardware & Drivers seems appropriate)

I do apologize. I have not used this type of correspondence before. I thought because the error occurred after the fix it was part of the original problem. I will post it where you suggested. Thank you again for all your help.

No need to apologise!
Your thought is a natural one- but I don't believe the two problems are more than peripherally involved.
To keep some form of order in this forum, we try to minimise the amount of non-central dealings we have - and most of the posters here (myself included) would not claim to be experts on printing problems.
If you find that the two are definitely related, feel free to come back (I would recommend that you you post a link to this thread in your Answers forums post), and we'll see what we can do.
