csrss.exe constant disk activity RRS feed

  • Question

  • My home server is constantly thrashing the disk.  This causes any file server activity (watch recorded TV, copy files, etc) to be severely hampered.  TV is not watchable in this state.

Using sysinternals it seems that demigrator pops up every now and then, but the dominant process using I/O is csrss.exe.  Has anyone else seen this?

  • CSRSS.EXE is the client/server runtime subsystem; it provides the user mode side of win32 (console windows, GUI, threading, etc.). Do you have any software installed on your server? Anything normally running at the server desktop?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • No, I don't have anything installed except a few addons - SMART, Disk Management Add-In and GridJunction.

This is embarassing, but I think at the time of the snapshot it may have been copying over a recorded show from another computer, which would definitely account for that traffic.  So this is a red herring.

But my WHS is definitely having issues.  I'll make another post about those specifics.
