Can't validate my genuine copy of XP i've had since new... RRS feed

  • Question

  • After my flatmate managed to install spyware on my main pc, i reformatted and reinstalled XP.

However when trying to validate (over the internet didn't work) the guy on the phone said my activation code was blocked because it had been activated 80+ times!!!!

Now, i bought this pc new and have only had to reinstall once, about 4 years ago when my motherboard died, and the phone activation went fine.  I've got the receipt and certificate of authenticity and i don't see how 80+ people could have got my activation key since then???

So here's the diag tool output:

  • The license is an OEM System Builder one - from where did you purchase it, and in what form was it packaged?

Does the Key in the report agree with the one from your COA sticker?

Unfortunately, no-one in the forums has the ability to cross-check the Product Keys any more - so you're left with only the Activation Center response as your basic info.

  • Thanks for the reply Noel...  I bought the pc as a custom build from a fairly respectable looking computer business in Brisbane Australia called Computer Function probably about 8 years ago.  I have the original hologram XP Pro CD along with the silver foil sticker on the PC case.  And yes the reported key matches the sticker code...

I suppose it's remotely possible that someone there kept the OEM keys but somehow it doesn't seem likely...  Come to think of it it's more likely that the shop where i got the motherboard replaced (in 2010) would have copied it - that was a different business named PC Shopper (also in Brisbane)

How likely is it that people just copy all the product keys they see?

  • It's unfortunately common practice in some of the less reputable stores, and almost totally untraceable (it's one of the risks of buying ex-demo machines from the larger stores - anyone passing through the store may have copied the Key). For the less reputable stores, any Key they can install on a couple of machines and get away with it is a major boost to finances.

Please check the examples in the following pages.... http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/howtotell/
