Genuine Works, but never takes effect?

Question
-
I have Windows Vista Home Basic, which came with my Acer Aspire T180. I have activated Vista. I have tried to make it Genuine, which is alwasy successful, but nothing ever happens. The little "Windows Vista(TM) Build 6000 This copy of Windows is not genuine." never goes away. My control panel doesn't open, I get an Aero message saying it's not working, Optional Update delivery isn't working, and many buttons don't work. For eg. I can't click on the system properties on the top of the section "Computer". Can someone help me? I am very frustrated with this...Thursday, March 13, 2008 1:49 AM

Hi Java,
Your Diagnostic Report shows Vista fully Genuine and I see no other licensing issues.
So the Personalization and the Control Panel problems do not appear to be caused by Vista's anti-piracy systems and as such, is outside my area of expertise. The only suggestion I could make is go to http://support.microsoft.com or to your Computer Manufacturer for additional support options.
Sorry I couldn't fix all your issues

Didn't work for me
Any other ideas?Thursday, March 13, 2008 11:36 PM -
What error did you recieve when you Validated?
What errors did you receive when you rebooted? (besides the Non-genuine message on the desktop)
Also, please rerun the Diagnostic Report and repost it so I can see if anything changed
Thank you,

When I validated, I received no errors (if you mean "Did genuine fail?"). It said it Validated successfully and I can now access some validation place. When I rebooted, I received the normal error, "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting because Windows Aero is not working" and soon I will get an error saying "Optional Update Delivery Isn't Working". EDIT: I plan on upgrading to Home Premium. In my mind, Home Basic is worthless and upgrading is only $80.00 without tax...Thursday, March 13, 2008 11:47 PM -
Hi JavaDan,
This is odd. It appears that a part of Vista thinks it's Non-Genuine, seen by the 2 error codes below:
Validation Status: Invalid License
Validation Code: 50But another part of Vista thinks it's Genuine, as seen by these 2 codes:
Online Validation Code: 0x0
Cached Validation Code: 0x0Normally, in rare situations like this are resolved by Validating online and then rebooting x2 (it usually syncs all of the Vista componets to the proper Genuine state). Since that didn't work, please try the below steps that will regenerate Vista's Licensing components.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step set #1
1) Open Internet Explorer
2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
3) Find the file cmd.exe
4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
6) Hit the Enter key
7) Reboot 2 times
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step set #2
1) Open Internet Browser
2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Reboot Twice
12) You may be required to Re-Activate. Use the Activate by Phone method outlined below
Activate by Phone steps:
a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.
b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enter and follow steps to Activate over the Phone.
NOTE: The key to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to transfer you to a Live Rep.Lastly, you mentioned that you wished to upgrade to Vista Home Premium. I want to give you the Pros and Cons of getting an Upgrade version of Home Premium vs getting a Full version. Please do Not think I'm trying to convince you of getting the Full version because I want you to spend more. My reasoning is that (in my personal opintion) the Windows Upgrade process is overly complicated and not user friendly. So please take a look at the Pros and Cons and decide for yourself if the benefit of a lower cost outweighs the possible frustration of getting the upgrade version.
Pro/Con of getting an Upgrade version of Home Premium vs. a Full version:
Pro:
1) Cost less
Con:
1) Upgrades can only be installed on top of lower versions of Windows. Meaning that if, In the future, you need to reinstall Home Premium, you would first need to re-install Home Basic and then upgrade back to Home Premium.
2) When installing an Upgrade, the Installer checks the computer for lower versions of Vista that qualify for upgrade, but once the upgrade is installed, Vista see itself as a full version. so, in the future, (after Home Premium is installed) and (for whatever reason) you need to re-enter the Home Premium Upgrade Product Key, Vista will not accept it because, at that point, Vista sees itself as a full version and your key is an upgrade key. You would have to re-install Home Premium to be able to use the Home Premium Upgrade Product Key again (which leads back to Con #1)
3) The Vista installer allows uers to install Vista without using a Product Key and to enter the product key at a later date. The problem is that when doing an upgrade and the user doesn't enter a product key, the installer doesn't know it is supposed to be doing an Upgrade and defaults to a full version install (Which will leave you in the same situation as Con #2, above).
again, these are my own personal opitions
Thank you,
Darin Smith

Thank you so much! I have finally gotten rid of the not genuine thing! No errors
I still have other problems which I do not know if there is any way of fixing. I cannot open "Personalization" from my desktop, when I open the control panel, it's empty, etc. Also, I would like to thank you for the Pros and Cons of Vista Home Premium Upgrade! I might get the full version. I'm still debating. Although, the upgrade is cheaper, it may have some issues. The only reasons I won't get full is because it is $160.00 USD ( I only have $100.00 right now :\ P.S I'm just a kid :\ ) and that if I have basic, I can just upgrade it for cheaper, which leads to the cons of upgrading. If you have anymore info on the problems with my Vista, or any Pros and Cons of Vista Premium Full, please tell me. Thank you
Friday, March 14, 2008 9:51 PM -
Hey JavaDan,
Glad to hear that, at least, part of the issue is resolved.
Would you try (one more time) going to http://microsoft.com/genuine, clicking the Validate Windows button and then rebooting 2 times (I know it's a pain). And if the you still cannot open "Personalization" from my desktop and/or the control panel is still empty, would you rerun the Diagnosic tool, one more time? I want to see if the problem with the Control Panel and the "Personalization" is related to my area of Vista (i.e. Licensing) or if it may be a core Vista issue (which I am not very knowledgeable in).
Thank you,
Darin

Thanks for the reply. Still, no luck with the Personalizeation stuff and by the way, the Control Panel won't open from the start menu. I have to go to "Computer" then to "Control Panel" then what I need.
