Windows Vista Validation- The product key you typed is invalid RRS feed

  • Question

  • Sorry for another post about this, but I can't seem to get any of the solutions (restarting SLSVC or fixing the Licensing service) to work.

After restarting my computer for updates, I got a message saying "The product Key you typed is invalid." I had the choice of entering a new one, buying a new one, or getting help. I tired entering the one of the sticker on the bottom of my computer, but it rejected it. Looking at the System properties, it had a OEM code currently registered, that it was now rejecting. I was unable to register by automated phone, as there was no option for that. Even running SLUI.exe 4 just returns me to entering the code.

I tried going and fixing the Licensing Store and restarting my computer twice (just because I saw that in some of the other threads), but all it did was change the message I got to "A unauthorized change was made to Windows" when I got the validation error. There is also now a link to go online and check validation, but that just tells me that the product is not available for purchase anymore.

I have a Dell XPS M1330 that came with Vista Preinstalled. I have since updated to SP1 & 2.

Here is the result of the MGA diagnostic. The product key it listed is not the one of my sticker, nor is it the OEM one that System Properties is listing.

NEVER be sorry about asking a question!
It's only when you don't ask the question that you have reason to regret it!! :)

I can see no good reason for your current problem in the report.

There is a small concern that you have two versions of Office installed - one of which is a Volume License Only version - but that is probably not the cause of your current predicament.

There is no 'fault' in your report which rings warning bells - which means that the chances are that you problem is one with the Licensing Store....
Please try the below steps to recreate the Store files.  This may resolve the issue.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Softwar eLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

     Reboot

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

  • I have a version of Office Home and Student, but that doesn't include Publisher, so I got a copy of that from my school, which would have been a volume licensing version, I believe.

I already tried the above steps, which is what changed my message from "The product key you typed is invalid" to a "A unauthorized change has been made to Windows." So the Diagnostic report above should include that. It is possible that I didn't complete the steps right, but everything seemed to work. Although I didn't open CMD.exe from a web broswer, as I wasn't able to make that work (I use Google Chrome, so maybe I needed to do it in IE). Instead I just went there in Windows Explorer.

It's not necessary to do it from a browser - it's a generic way to access the file and give it Admin privileges, that's really only required if the problem PC is pre-SP2

Since you've already done this, then your only option is to change the Product Key from the one in your report (the OEM_SLP Key) to the COA_SLP Key on your COA sticker on the computer's case, using either the SLUI 3  command, or the Change Product Key link in System Properties. Note that you will have to use Telephone Activation after changing the Key.

  • The code on the sticker doesn't work either, and I am unable to access telephone activation, even when I type in slui.exe 4, as I read about in other posts.

    Note that I said SLUI   3  - not 4!
SLUI 3 accesses the change product key wizard, while 4 accesses the Activate by Phone wizard (which may not work unless you have an activateable Key, which your OEM_SLP Key is not)

  • Except that SLUI 3 doesn't except my COA code.

I believe that I typed it right, but the sticker has worn off a bit. But everything seems to be right, and I have examined the sticker closely, to see if I had missed anything.

  • I recommend trying the steps that Noel posted again.  Just make sure you opened the CMD  as Administrator

"4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'"

NOTE: Since you state you have already tried the steps once, you may need to change step #7

    from "7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar"

to "7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.ba2   (or .ba3 or anything other then .bar)

    Thank you,

  • I tried again, making sure that I Ran CMD.exe as a Administrator and that I changed tokens .bar to tokens.ba2
I still got a activation message and it rejected my COA code.
When I restart twice, does it matter if I log on to my account (which I did), or do I need to restart it directly from the welcome page?

It doesn't make any difference, as far as I am aware.

Please post a new MGADiag report.

  • Okay, here's a new one. It says that the product key is a OEM key, but it doesn't match the one showing up in System Properties, which is completely numerical, except for the letters OEM.  The one in the report doesn't match my COA code either.

But is there a difference between Product Key and Product ID (which is what it says in the system properties Window)? I would try enter the code in the report, except the first two sections are hidden.

Okay, here's a new one.

What appears in System Properties is not the Key, but the Product ID - which is created after installation of the Key.

This really looks as if the software Licensing Service isn't running  - in which case there should be a specific flag.

    Please try the following
Open a Command Prompt window (click on Start, in the Search box type CMD, and hit the Enter key).
    At the prompt, type

    SC QC SLSVC
hit the Enter key and wait for the response

    do the same for
    SC QUERYEX SLSVC
    SC SDSHOW SLSVC
    SC QPRIVS SLSVC
    SC QSIDTYPE SLSVC

Copy the results to your response here.

Sorry for the weird formatting, but the post editor is giving me trouble.

(FYI - there's a much easier way than either - click on the little icon in the top left of the Command Prompt windows - select Edit, then  'Select all' - then hit the Enter key, and Paste the result into Notepad or your response  done in 5 secs <g>)

There's a line missing from the
SC QUERYEX result - it should read
    STATE              : 4  RUNNING
    or
    STATE              : 1  STOPPED

If it's actually missing in your window then there's something VERY strange going in which I don't understand (yet)

Let me do some research while you check that this line is indeed missing.

  • Lets try going back to basics.

You stated that the steps that Noel originally posted (the one what involve renaming tokens.dat to tokens.ba2 and such) worked without issue except that the Product Key from the CoA sticker wasn't accepted. I think that is the key point. I'm not sure why it's not accepting it, but lets try a different way of entering the CoA Key.

    1. Open an Elevated Command Prompt: Click on Start button and type: cmd then Right-click the CMD file, in the results, and select the "run as administrator"

    2. Now type following command: slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

<be sure to replace the xxxxx-xxxxx... with your CoA product key>

Once done, (if the key is accepted...which it should) try Activation by Phone

Regardless of the results, post another diagnostic repost so we can see if anything has changed.

    Thank you

  • Okay, I did that. After typing into the command prompt, nothing happened, it just returned another input line. I opened up system properties, to see if anything had changed. It said "Status Unavailable" under validation. I closed it, and a message popped up. I am not sure if it was from system properties, or from the command prompt.

    Windows Script Host

Run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004F050' to display error text.

    Error: 0xC004F050

When I ran that, it got the same error message along with "The Software Licensing Service reported that the key was invalid."

I then opened slui.exe 4 (which I believe is phone activation?), which just gave me the same registration window as always, which still rejected the COA code.

  • At this point, I am not sure if the problem is with the CoA key or with Windows not being able to recognize and accept a CoA key.  Since I can't check the CoA key (because you Do Not want to post a Key in a public forum) I think your next step is to contact Microsoft Assisted Support, at one of the below URLs, for further assistance. (assisted support is private one-on-one support like phone or email, that way your product key won't be at risk)

    North America: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_genadv_master?ws=support&ws=support#tab4

    Outside North America:
