Project Server 2010 Academic Question: What happens to task hours updated to a project schedule if you restore a project file from the Archive Database... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Details:

I have a 2010 Instance of Project Server, and this new deployment will use the 2007 DB's (partial DB attach) for production.  I was presenting how the 4 DB's work to a co-working and they asked a very good question.

Since we use the Task Updating capability (note: timesheets are disabled), and resources enter their hours against tasks on a daily basis, what would happen if a file became corrupt and we had to restore the project schedule from the Archive Database?

Do we loose all task updates from the team members?

I believe the answer to be yes, but this would take a significant amount of time to test as a solution.

    Thoughts?

    Hi there,

Answer to your question is NO, as a best practice, every week project manager accepts the task updates and publishes the project plan. If you have schedule administrative backup of Project Plans using PWA, which nothing but taking backup in archive database, all processed task updates will be backup. In case of plan corruption, one has to delete the project plan from draft and published database. Using administrative restore option restore the project plan which will be available in draft database accessed via Project Pro. When restored project plan is published.

Only missing updates will be pending tasks approval before taking administrative backup.

Often archive project plan method is used to store completed project plan for quick reference in the future.
