MCSA:2k3 to MCSA 2k8 RRS feed

  • Question

  • So if I am understanding this correctly, as I have talked to MS reps via the chat link, that MCITP:SA will be going way, but if I already have the MCSA:2k3 I can continue to take the 640 & 642 OR 648 tests AFTER July 31st, 2013 and then have upgraded my MCSA:2k3 to a MCSA:2k8 certification.  If so, that's not what was relayed and I have been panicking on trying to knock those out fast.  I hate to start completely over from MCSA 2k3 if there is no upgrade path after July 31st, 2013.  Heck, the 2k3 tests were around for 10 years......

    Thanks in advance.

  • The 648 exam only covers part of what is required to become MCSA 2008. If you don't take the 648 upgrade exam before July 31, you will need to take the two exams it covers 640 and 642 after that date. In addition, you will still need to take the 646 exam to complete the MCSA 2008 upgrade.

Since you are upgrading from MCSA: 2003 to MCSA: 2008, you will need to take at least two exams, 648 and 646. The 648 exam (retiring July 31, 2013) covers what is covered in 640 and 642.  The 646 exam is the Server Administrator exam and will need to be taken to complete your MCSA 2008.  If you were a newcomer, to become MCSA: 2008, you will need to take the following exams 640, 642, and 646. The below external URL gives a better understanding about the 2003-2008 upgrade. I tried to find more info in the MS Learning site about upgrading from 2003, but the focus has changed to include 2012.

Personally, I would recommend going straight for MCSA: Server 2012.  When all is said and done, you will still be taking 3 exams to get to that point: MCSA: 2012 via Upgrading: 648 (before July 31), 646, 417; MCSA: 2012 Direct: 410, 411, 412.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the information.  I was getting ready to take 70-293 and just try and wrap up MCSE 2k3 and be done with it, but it appears that time is not on my side at this point.  We are just now upgrading some servers to 2k8, but you are right, the 2012 does make more since in terms of time and effort.  I would need to take 6 tests total just to go from 2k3 , to 2k8, then to 2012 MCSA.  That's not even including working towards MCSE 2k8 or 2012.

I also need to focus on MS DBA certs for work, so I need to fall back and regroup to come up with a more solid plan that isn't going to tax me on studying.  Thanks again and have a good one!
