  • General discussion

  • I have never been so disgusted in my life...

I have had this computer for 5 years and never had a problem until one day I turned it on and all of a sudden it says that my windows software is not genuine??????

thats ubsured!!!!  is this a scam by mirosoft to make us buy more product? I think so.

this has happened because I have automatic updates and thats how they did this, I will spread the word... the worst part is you can not get it off your computer or use windows update until you get the product for $149.00

  • Bob,

Step 1 is to download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then with the Windows tab in the foreground click Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a response message in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticty (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

  • Bob King,

Unfortunately, both your XP installation and Office installation are "unauthorized."

Your Sony has had a Volume License (VL) edition of XP Pro installed.  These are never properly sold to individuals, but are used by businesses, schools, gov't, etc--organizations with a lot of computers.  The Volume Licensing Key (VLK) has been blocked.  This block is applied by MS at the request of the orignal owner of the VLK most likely because the key was lost, stolen, or compromised.  Or, MS could have noticed a pattern of misuse, ie, many more installations than are authorized for the license.

The good news is that your Sony PCV-RX540 almost certainly came from Sony with a Windows operating system preinstalled, and it's almost certain that license for Windows is still valid.

  • My Windows XP Pro was installed on computer when bought new. I did have some do some repair work a year or so ago but can't find him now to see if he changed the number from when it was first built. How do I find out what the original registration numbers were and possibly change back to them. I know they were good back then. I am upset about this and CANNOT afford to buy the program now and am quite dependant on the computer with a son in college that uses it constantly for all of his classes including his music classes. HELP!!!!!!!!
