Non-genuine problem solved by reinstalling the SLSVC - unfortunately there were also issues with the VSS (also uninstalled), which I didn't feel competent to deal with.OP is considering upgrading to Win7.

Somehow, your Software Licensing Service (SLSVC) has been uninstalled. Please check the following....1) that the file C:\Windows\system32\SLsvc.exe exists, and its version number is 6.0.6002.180052) Can you create a System Restore point?3) What Anti-Virus are you using? - is it up-to-date?armed with the answers to that, please email me at ngsATcrashfixpcDOTcoDOTuk (make the obvious changes) so that I can advise further - the solution is to reinstall the service, but I haven't done it in Vista often enough to be sure that the procedure is suitable for 'public' consumption yet. Please also respond to this post, so that others are aware.
