nbtstat -> event viewer error -> duplicate name RRS feed

  • Question

  • This may not be related to WHS but Olaf's FAQ makes reference to nbtstat. The event viewer on one computer reports a duplicate name, but it's assigned to only one computer. Any suggestions as to how to determine the root cause and resolve it?

BOXERNET is the name of my workgroup. BOXER6 is the computer on which this error is reported. It's connected by wireless, not ethernet, and I have a Juniper Networks VPN client installed but not currently connected.

    Thanks in advance

  • Duplicate names may simply come up in context with multiple network adapters, recently changed IP addresses, outdated responses from Master Browser or similar stuff (also a altered hosts file still pointing to the wrong server could be a cause for this).
Because such stuff is hard to track down, is one of the reasons, why NetBIOS is being replaced with DNS and other methods.
Your records look normal (00 is workstation, 20 file server, 00 (Group)  Domain Name, 20 (Group) Internet group.
See also Technet for NetBIOS names reference.
