Non genuine software message

Question
-
The genuine software check program tells me my windows 7 software in non geniune. and some components are disabled. In addition, whenever I try to install upgrades, the upgrades fail.As recommended, I ran the diagnostic report, see belowIt says windows XP in the first part, and the product key is different to the one posted on my computer that I bought new over a year ago from HP with windows 7 installed J3C4Y IS THE PRODUCT KEY on my computer. I activated the software when the machine was new.I linked the computer to my old computer that had windows xp to transfer the files and other software. I no longer have the old machine to check the numbers.

Please RESET the SPPSVC back to Automatic -Delated Start - that is the correct setting.
Try UNinstalling the WAT Update (KB971033) from Programs&Features/Installed Updates - then reinstalling it by downloading it from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033 and running the download (make sure that you get teh proper version for your machine - the 64-bit one)
The reboot twice, and run another report

Glad to hear progress. This is not a good forum for update issues. There is a Windows 7/Vista/XP Windows Update forum at
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update?tab=all
Also, Microsoft gives free support for update issues.

Please remove Your COA product key. This is a public forum. The partial product key in your report is sufficient.Saturday, September 3, 2011 1:54 AMAnswerer

Moderator: Please remove the COA product key.
Roverbilly: As George says in his reply, NEVER print a full product key online. NEVER.
The COA (sticker) product key is different from the one in your report because the report shows that your current key is the one embedded by HP at the time of manufacture. The COA key is only used in emergencies (when the embedded key cannot sync with a table in the BIOS).
First try using System Restore to a point before this error appeared. If that does not work, try the system file checker:
Click Start, type 'cmd' in the Search/Run box, and right click on the CMD icon at the top of the results pane. Select Run as Administrator. When the cmd window opens type 'sfc /scannow' at the prompt and hit Enter. When the scan completes close the cmd window.
Run the MGADiag tool again and paste the report in a reply here.

Thanks Colin, I edited my question to remove the numbers, with hindsight, I realize my folly. I will follow your instructions as soon as I have the opportunity and report back. I do appreciate the feedback.

Did you restart the computer after running sfc? If so, there may be a registry issue. SFC does not address those. Do you know if the software protection service is started (click Start, type 'services.msc' and hit Enter)?

The question is the service running or not? Something may have stopped it regardless how it is set to start. Also, do a restart and then run the MGADiag report again.

Colin, it was not running, I did not see the stautus line when I first checked, I changed the setting from automatic - delayed to automatic and started it. So far I have not had the non genuine message on the reboot. The MS updates that started automatically when I re booted still do not install, according to the history, the last sucesful update install was on 12 th July, everything since thenm has failed Updated diagnostic report. Try installing the updates while in clean boot mode. The following link will help you set up a clean boot. Essentially it starts the computer with only Microsoft services and programs running. If you have a piece of software causing the problem this will not only help install the updates but also diagnose what third party software is glitching.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796
I see a lot of file mismatches involving the software protection service so I am going to defer to Noel Paton (our resident guru on these issues). Hopefully he will be on the forum again at the beginning of the week.

Noel, thanks for the feedback, I've been on vacation for a few days.
Due to the non legal software message, I am no longer able to install updates, I lost the facility in July, after 2 years of no issues. I keep getting messages that there are 15 updates to install, butI can't install them, IO get error messages
KB971033 was installed in February, if I uninstall it, will it cause any issues if I am not able to reinstall it.
The illegetimate grinding is getting to me !!!!
Thanks Bill

The WAT Update does not affect any other update – but you should re-install it as soon as possible (after rebooting at least once)Being non-genuine should only affect the installation of non-security updates – unless there are other problems as well.

Noel, I deleted the WAT upgrade and tried to re install, it failed, I rebooted twice and updates still fail.
Looking at my update history, I have over a year of succesful updates until the 27th April, there were 6 updates that day, only tyhe first two were succesful, then 4 failed, every update since then has failed, I am told that there are 15 updates awaiting instrallation, but each has failed multiple times. The last successful upgrade was KB 2506928
Thanks and regards
Bill

If you haven't run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, please try it.

Colin, thank you, I ran the troubleshooter, it told me that it fixed some issues, but, after rebooting, I still can't downlod the updates. Amongst others I get error code 8000FFF
I found a file for a windows genuine check, it did the check and gave me a code number to nter, got a mesage thank you for confirming genuine windows, I have not seen the non genuine messsage for a while, but I still get failed updates.

Glad to hear progress. This is not a good forum for update issues. There is a Windows 7/Vista/XP Windows Update forum at
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update?tab=all
Also, Microsoft gives free support for update issues.

Thank you Noel and Colin for your advice and guidance. I have not had the non genuine windows message for a couple of reboots, so I will now follow the update failure trail for a while and see where it leads. I really appreciate your guidance. Thank you BillThursday, September 15, 2011 12:48 AM
