I'm setting up new Win7 laptops for the kids and want to configure the Music\Photos\Videos sharing on my home server as read only for their accounts. Seems like there are 4 different mechanisms for sharing:
- Shared Folders: Standard file sharing. Each shared folder has a per user permission (full|read|none). With Win7 clients the server Music|Photos|Video folders will also show up in the libraries view with the correct "permissions".
- Media Sharing: Also called Media Library Sharing. The only options are on|off for Music|Photos|Video. But it's also called "Streaming" which would imply that access is read only for all users, or does it depend on the type of client? In Windows Media Player this shows up under "Other Libraries" as "User 1 (servername)".
- Windows Media Center: Has a single global "Allow|Don't Allow" access setting. Not clear at all what the level of access is? Or to which resources access is given? Could someone with physical (or wireless) access to my network delete all of my media without a login? Does this use stream or file access?
- Media Center Extender Access: Has a global "Full|Read|None" access setting for each Shared Folder.
I just want to prevent my kids from inadvertently corrupting or deleting my media files...
