Remote Web Access - Computers gadget - showing unsupported operating system for W7 Premium clients RRS feed

  • Question

  • After many frustrating hours just to get RMA to work I find an error in the Computer gadget for my W7 Premium clients.  It reads "Unsupported operating system" for all of them and I only have W7 Premium clients connected.  I can connect to the server from the clients using the dashboard or RDP.  Has anyone else experienced this or know how to correct it and no I'm not buying W7 Ultimate for every client I have.  Thanks for any help to resolve this problem.

  • This is not an error - it is expected behaviour and by design. What it is telling you is that you cannot log on to your Windows 7 Home Premium computers via WHS and use the PCs. This has always been the case. You need the Professional or the Ultimate versions to do this.

Frankly, I think that Microsoft sail close to false advertising on this issue. While they sometimes put in the small print that you can't actually remotely access your Windows 7 Home Premium computers, they often leave this out in their product inofrmation. See the documents here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26533

All of the three "Top 10 Reasons" documents, and the "Windows Home Server Datasheet" document state that you can "Connect and take control of your home-based computers with full access while away from home" or words to that effect.

None of them bother to state that you can't actually do this if you're running Windows 7 Home Premium on your home PCs.

Er, hello, what operating systems are most Home users going to be running on their Home PCs?

This is a question best asked of the desktop group, I'm afraid. The Home and Small Business Server group can't (i.e. "is not permitted to") enable features in clients that the desktop group sees as differentiators for home/business/premium SKUs.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks Geoffc1.  I'm glad I asked before spending hours trying to fix something I can't.  Seems like a ploy to get you to buy the software twice when you look at what most new desktops or laptops come with.  Thanks again for the useful answer.
