Acceptable to install OCS on a machine running DPM/WSS/SCCM? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Times are tight..  We have the licensing for OCS but not the hardware..

I have a few servers that really aren't doing a whole lot - particularly DPM..  Daytime syncs can't be all that resource intensive - I wonder if it's acceptable to install OCS on the same machine running DPM?

Any insight is appreciated!  I also have a 'backup' domain controller that isn't doing a whole lot..

  • Which OCS feature or functionality do you intend to deploy? How many users and their geographical locations?

  • OCS on a DC is totally not supported!
If it comes to DPM/WSS/SCCM do a perfmon trace to check CPU/Memory usage if it does not show sudden spikes that could interrupt OCS

  • Basically only as a chat client - we don't have a SIP based phone system so that's out.  At this point only about 70 users, 5 of which are in another office connected via bovpn (soon to be mpls).  It would need to scale up to about 200 users though, primarily at our main office.

  • If you only want to use Presence and Instant Messaging for 70 to 200 users you should be fine if you install it together with other applications.
The Standard edition for OCS supports up to 5000 users and that is including voice/video & conferencing
