WHS2011 SSL cert reecovery question --homeserver.com RRS feed

  • Question

  • My WHS 2011 server died, and I had to rebuild from scratch.

I got a domain name and cert from Microsoft <MyDomainName>.homeserver.com for the original server.

I don't seem to have a cert for the computer any more. I can connect to the domain name via IE, but not from my Windows Phone 8; says I need a cert installed. Looking in certmgr--don't see any SSL installed.

How do I get a copy of my cert? No docs anywhere that I can find.

  • You go through the same process to set up your remote access website, enter the same email address for the associated Live ID, and recover your vanity URL and a new certificate for it. Then I believe you reinstall the phone app and set that up again.

Until you've done the first part, your vanity URL may still be pointed to your server, but really that's by accident (your ISP hasn't changed your IP address recently) and the SSL certificate on your server isn't valid for the domain yet.

Note: I don't have a Windows phone any more, so I can't test this. Also, if the Live ID you used for the original setup hasn't been used for anything else, it's possible that Microsoft deleted it (that happens after a period of disuse). In that case, the original vanity URL is irretrievable.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I told WHS2011 to add a new Microsoft domain name. Logged in. Pointed it to the existing name.

It went  through setting up everything again.

Rebooted. No change. WP app can't find the server.

Certmgr doesn't show any certificate on WHS2011.

Do I have to start over?

Really no docs or info anywhere..
