PS2010 - Project SharePoint Groups deleted, how to restore? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

one of our technical administrators wanted to separate the rights from the BI-Center from the rest of the PWA. He stopped inheriting and it seems he then deleted the Project Server specific SharePoint Groups (Project Managers Group, Web Administrators Group,...).

Because of deleting the groups and not removing rights for BI Center, the groups have also been deleted from the rest of the PWA. Is there a possibility to get them back and synced to the Project Server permissions?
Can I recreate those groups manually?

I would appreciate your help as momentarily the users cannot access the PWA anymore.

    Regards,
    Gáski

  • Hello Amit,

thanks for your suggestion. At this moment we didn't have any backups as we newly created the system.

We solved it the following way:

    1. As nobody had access anymore (the Web Administrators group has been deleted too) one of our admins added himself in the CA as site collection administrator

    2. The site collection admin could access the PWA site and than removed and added the other admins to the Project Server security group Administrators and other users to the other security groups.

    3. By adding users to the security groups Project Server seemingly recreated the SharePoint groups

  • Hello Gaski,

Microsoft Project Server 2010 is completely dependent on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 to support its user interface and farm topology. Security at the authentication level is tightly integrated between Project Server 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010, whereas user and group authorization is handled separately by Project Server 2010.  It seems to be difficult to restore only deleted groups from Sharepoint site.
Its not recommanded to delete the OOB groups/content type. It might not work or with broken functionality even if you create these groups manaully.

Just a quick question: Do you have a backup of your server farm or PWA databases?
I would try to do the below:
    1. If you have backup of Entire farm, I would suggest to restore the same.
    2. If you have PWA four databases & Content database, Create a new webapp, PWA & restore all 4 dartabases & content database.

    Hope that helps.
