Live Writer Alternative

  We just got a Surface and imagine my utter dismay when Live Writer was not installed and it wasn't an available app.  A little research and I learn that Microsoft is abandoning the Live series.  There is NO viable alternative to Live Writer so I cannot fathom why this decision was made.  I tried the template for Word 2013 for blogs and while it looks like a viable alternative it quite simply does not work.  It cannot connect to the blog service and we've tried everything.  What is Microsoft doing to either revitalize Live Writer for Windows 8 or to make the template in Word 2013 functional?
