License, Windows Home Server RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Just to put this out there.  It's BS that you cannot call and get a new user license to activate Windows Home Server.  Instead you get a free trial with SP3, then buy the software from a OEM vendor that has SP1 only.  So you are FORCED to do a complete reinstall to include updating the purchased software on the server, then reinstall all the user computers.  Just would have be a WHOLE lot simpler for all of little people out here to buy a SP3 license and put the new license in with out all the above hassles.  But simple minded people travel in groups and we lead around to easily.  Just another day wasted realining computers, THANKs MARKETING STAFF.

  • If you think that Microsoft should distribute full software, without a time bomb, as the evaluation software you downloaded, the right place for that comment is probably Connect.

That said, at present what you want to do is impossible because of that time bomb. Even if you had a product key to enter, there is that time bomb in the operating system which will disable Windows Home Server at the end of 120 days. This time bomb is not tied to the product key and can't be defeated with a different product key. Probably this was done for revenue protection reasons; Windows Home Server seems to be pretty popular among software pirates, and if you could get a full, non-expiring version of the product directly from Microsoft and then just use keygen software to create a product key to unlock it, it would be even more popular in those circles.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I had read that in several different areas, as well as at some of the OEM dealers sites. I just had trouble believing that was the case, what a farce!

  • I have just run into this problem. I installed the trial naively thinking I could just buy a license online or by phone, now I can't get it going., I can't access all the data I copied over. I tried accessing the drives individually but of course that doesn't work because they spanned 4 hard drives. How Can I protect my data and get WHS activated?
