Synching without using the Live Desktop

Question

Will we be getting the ability to synch folders without having them synch with the Live Desktop too? (I know I could do this with foldershare if I really wanted, but Mesh is cooler ;)). At the moment, you don't get the option to remove the Live Desktop as a synching option to a folder.

Hello everyone,
Today there is no way to specify which files and folders you want sync'ed to the Live Desktop. This has been an popular feature request (especially once you've hit the 5GB quota) so you can be sure it's on the radar. As bananaman points out, we put the option in the dialog to display future intent, but the feature isn't available yet.Feel free to add this to the Wish List so you guys can express your enthusiasm for it ;)
Thanks,
Richard

Yes I have the same question. How to make Live Mesh behave like FolderShare for some folders?
In the Live Mesh Options->Change Sync Settings menu for a meshed folder, the Synchronize files "Never with this device" option is grayed out for Live Desktop. Is this a feature to be added in a future release?
I have folders which I want to synchronize, but which definitely don't need to be pushed up to the Live Desktop.
Should we log feature requests?
Thanks!

I'd also like this kind of functionality.
I'm currently using FolderShare and Mesh. I really like the idea of Mesh much better, but I've got a couple of folders that I really only need synced up between my office and home. I'll never work with them when I'm not in one of those two places and would like them for not to be counted against my storage limits. I also do backups for those folders and so don't really need the Live Desktop to act as a "backup" for them.
I can continue to use FolderShare for this and I am currently, but once I know Mesh is stable and won't lose any important files accidently I intend to move these over to Mesh so I can use that exclusively.Thursday, May 1, 2008 12:46 PM -

However, one needs a common point. Not all devices will always be online at time you push files up. So it acts as a queue in that way. When other devices come online, they will get the files. IMO, LD is required to handle variations of clients online/offline. All "known" syncd files could be deleted from live desktop automatically silently without telling the clients - to give same effect to peer-to-peer.- Edited by WilliamStacey Saturday, May 3, 2008 1:05 PM grammer

In a true mesh, there is no common point. There might be seed-servers required to facilitate the initial contact, but those seeds could just as well be my servers as the Microsoft Live Desktop data center.
As for devices being on or off-line, again this can't matter ... or the entire architecture is flawed. (Which I don't believe it is). If I update files on my laptop while disconnecte from the Internet, then when I connect my devices will discover each other (via specified or cached seed servers) and then are fully capable to perform peer-to-peer transfers of all updated information ... bi-directionally.
I really think that it is important for Microsoft to demonstrate to the world that this truly is a Mesh ... with no hierarchical requirements. When I have experimented with the peer-to-peer SDK, I was able to configure my own seed servers so that I had no requirement of Microsoft seed servers ... Live Mesh ought to support the same configuration ...Sunday, May 4, 2008 5:18 AM -

Once the computers in the mesh know where (IP-wise) each other are, they can all act like the live desktop. Say that two computers are Online and one is Offline, and that one of the Online computers wants to send files to the Offline one. Just in case the online computer with new files shuts down or goes Offline, it can store a shadow of those files on the other Online computer. In the event that the computer with new files does shut down, the other Online computer will realize that, (through something like a ping) and take the temporary responsibility of watching for the Offline computer that needs new files. Note that in the mesh, you could replace one of these imaginary computers with the Live Desktop and have it work the same way. That would make it a true mesh, as Humancell said, "With no common point." The advantage of having a Live Desktop is that it can hand out permissions to new computers to generate new nodes in the mesh, and is an "always-online" computer that is convenient to delegate synchronization to.
Like WilliamStacey said "It [the Live Desktop] acts as a queue..." The above example illustrates using other computers as queues, which eliminates central points in the mesh.
