I think I finally discovered my problem after trying multiple installs, uninstalls over and over with different environments--anti virus / firewall on / off...anything and every combo I could think of, just basic things starting up etc.
It dawned on me that after my fresh Windows install, I had never updated my motherboard chipset drivers (ie ethernet drivers, etc.)
Downloaded latest MB drivers and live mesh is working like a charm even after reboot!
Thanks again for all your help. I hope this is really and finally my fix!

After reinstalling XP have you installed all updates and service packs?

Is there an error message when Live Mesh fails to start?

no error message just that live mesh did not start "click here to restart". When I try to repair the install via add/remove programs, during that process it will error and ask if I want to submit to Microsoft.Saturday, March 27, 2010 11:26 PM

Try removing all bits of Live Mesh manually per the steps outlined in this thread: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/e22e0115-98d1-47eb-b495-ff3e10acb0a6
Did you format the drive to reinstall Windows or was this a reinstall on top of an existing Windows installation?
What security software is running? Did you disable any services to tweak Windows?

Did quick format on the drive. I tried the Live Mesh install prior to installing my anti-virus software. No services disabled. I will try the steps in the link you posted. Thank you!Sunday, March 28, 2010 1:34 AM

Tried the link instruction and could not get it to accept any commands. Not sure if I am just entering commands wrong or if something else is wrong.Sunday, March 28, 2010 4:38 PM

What happens when you enter the commands? Are you trying to do them via Start/Run or in a Command Prompt window?Installing on XP
-
Click on Start
Select All Programs
Select Accessories
Click on Command Prompt
-
Navigate to the location that you saved the LiveMesh.exe installer
LiveMesh.exe /repair (assumes the product was already installed or needs to be repaired)
LiveMesh.exe /uninstall (removes the product)
LiveMesh.exe (no switch, installs the product)
The above is generic and assumes that you know how to navigate within a Command window. When you open the Command window you are located at a command prompt such as c:\>
Assuming that you saved the installer to a folder called C:\temp - you would navigate to that folder by typing:
cd \
cd \temp
There is a space between the cd and the backslash.
When you are at c:\temp> you would then type in the above command: LiveMesh.exe /uninstall

Hi Stephen,
I have exactly the same problem as pieri. I got a replacement hard drive with XP SP2 and after installing Live Mesh, it won't start (BTW, the only options that respond to my mouse click on the context menu are Exit, Help and Check for Updates. Show Notifier, Sign in and Options don't do anything when I click on them and the menu remains visible).
The new hard drive has all of the corporate gubbins on it so I'm assuming that it's the Symantec Protection Agent (which wasn't on my previous laptop) that is preventing Live Mesh from starting. Can you confirm this or should I persist in getting it to work?
Thanks,
Russell

It sure sounds like Live Mesh is being blocked. It installed correctly, yes? Can you disable the Symantec Agent? I don't know that it has been widely reported, but it is certainly possible that this is a known issue. I assume that the PC is adminstered by IT and it is part of a domain with Group Policy applied? Have you checked with IT to see if they are blocking Live Mesh? If sign in is unavailable at start, that either suggests a service is not started, Live Mesh doesn't detect a network connection, or it is in the process of signing in.

I finally got it to work! I did the following:
Through the command prompt, following the instructions above...
Installed LiveMesh.exe > after install, received error as before >> using command prompt, performed a repair >> said reboot was needed >> rebooted and was able to login and sync my folders once again ...tears of joy rolled down my cheeks ;)
Thank you Stephen

Yep, it was the Symantec Agent. I was able to "Allow" the "Mesh Operating Environment" within the Symantec Agent console and it all works now.

I spoke too soon...the same problem has returned on startup of my PC this morning. Tried the same steps as yesterday with cmd prompt, no success in repair or getting it to work again. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Well, the odd thing is that you reinstalled Live Mesh, ran a repair, it worked, and then on a reboot it failed again, with a subsequent repair not working. Something on your PC is potentially blocking or impacting the ability of Mesh to start and run. Why the repair worked yesterday before the reboot, I don't know, though.

Would log files help at all?
I found this in one log file, among other things: ERRR,Moe,0,1,4,FileSystemServices.CreateFolder: Failed with WinError 183
Wednesday, March 31, 2010 1:03 PM -
That error means, as near as I can tell, "file already exists." Or, to put it another way, a file cannot be created, because that file already exists.
Go to www.mesh.com and check your devices. Is the PC that you reinstalled the OS on listed? If so, remove it from the Mesh.
Remove Live Mesh from the machine once again, using the cleanup per above, if needed.
Now, go to Windows Update and make sure that *all* updates are installed. Check your Update history for failed updates. Make sure that you are on SP3.
Try reinstalling Live Mesh. If it fails again, please list out all of the other programs you've got installed and running on the PC at boot.

Wow, that's an interesting issue. I wonder if it was some obscure drive controller issue.
