Syncing folders with different names

Question
-
Can you sync the contents of a Live Desktop folder with the contents of a differently named folder on a client machine, without creating a sub-folder on the client machine?
i.e. Syncing 'MyDocs' on Live Desktop to the 'Documents' folder on a MacBook.
This creates a sub-folder called MyDocs in the Documents folder, which I do not want.
This does not seem logical to me, as you have told the mesh software to sync 'MyDocs' with the 'Documents' folder. In reality it is syncing with the new subfolder.
I assume the syncing relies on the folder name and to avoid subfolder creation I should call the Live Desktop folder 'Documents'. Would Mesh then see them as the 'same' folder and sync their contents without creating a subfolder?Friday, December 19, 2008 12:12 PM

I don't have a Mac to test, but it works on Windows. However, renaming the folder later will break the sync connection (renaiming it back repairs the connection)

Ok thanks, I've got the mac set to dual boot windows xp, so I'll setup mesh in that and see what happens.Friday, December 19, 2008 3:35 PM

One thing you could do (which I don't know if it will work out on a Mac as I've not tested it) is create a symbolic link folder named "MyDocs" pointed at "Documents" and then point Live Mesh to sync the symlink folder. You can squirrel the symlink folder away where you don't have to see it. I'm unsure how Mac OS X treats Unix soft links, but it it follows them transparantly, then this should work without a hitch.

Thanks for the advice. Figured out what I was doing wrong - when you first sync a folder with a device it automatically assumes that you want to sync with the same folder name. If you just select the actual folder you want to sync with and then delete the sub folder that is automatically added to the path, then it will sync with the folder selected.
So, syncing 'MyDocs' folder on Live Desktop with 'Documents' on the Mac automatically adds a new 'MyDocs' folder to the sync path. If you delete it then it will sync with just 'Documents' (although it will warn the folder already exists). Bit obvious really, I was being thick!
