Moving to a new laptop - want to run my old 'laptop' installation under VMWare RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've just invested in a new laptop, and want to create a vmware image of my old laptop to run under VMWare on the new machine. As the old laptop had an OEM licence, I purchased a new XP licence to use in the virtual machine. I created the new image using vmware converter, and as expected, when I boot it up it requires me to re-validate. I put in the new key, but it just loops, telling me the key is incorrect. I even tried one from my Action Pack, with the same results.

Any one with any ideas how I go about getting a new licence installed so I can run the virtual machine?

  • Duncan Bradley,

The key for the VMWare and the laptop are different types of licenses so it will not work.

I hope that answered your question!

  • Did you purchase a new OEM license or did you purchase a retail license?

  • I have tried one of each so far. I was expecting the OEM to work, when it didn't I tried a full retail pack, neither without any success.
