Express Back-up not working?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all.. I've been using OneCare Backup since I got my computer but recently I've run across this problem with using it.. Always before (once the initial backup was done the first time) I've simply clicked on the 'express' button to have the program add the few files I've downloaded since the previous backup, but suddenly that button is no longer there and it's not giving me the option of doing my normal 'express' backup, instead it wants to do the full 8 gig backup that it did the first time I used the program.. Does anyone know what's going on? I have no desire to tie up my computer for hours on end doing a 'full' backup again, it's not necessary since this info is already on the disks from the first bkup.. Also, I don't have a lot of extra money to spend to buy a set of new CDs.. I just use my CD drive for my backup, not an external one, they also cost too much.. Well, that's it, sure hope someone can help me.. Thanks

  • This could happen if you reinstalled One Care. When you reinstall One Care you will be asked to perform a new complete backup. If you have not reinstalled One Care and cannot perform an incremental backup please contact support. • No Jim, I never touched OneCare, neither to uninstall or reinstall.. I've never had any problems with it before this so would have had no reason to remove it.. I can tell you that this happened right after Windows did one of their recent updates and now I've been told (by some tech in India that I called for help with the problem) this is the reason the Express 'button' is no longer there, that MS made a mistake and removed the Express option, if this is so, they created a serious error and need to correct it asap.. If anyone has any other explaination for the 'disappearance' of this option, I'd love to hear it but let's be very clear, I personally did not remove, uninstall or do anything else to this program to create the problem.. Thanks

P.S. I tried following your link and doing what it suggested but I can't even get it to respond.. It gets to this page:

http://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=a&market=en-us#faq and there it sits.. It doesn't load up anything and nothing happens when I click on FAQ or Table of Contents.. It just keeps 'saying' loading, but nothing happens.. It looks to me like the program has got some problems I wasn't even aware of besides the missing 'Express' option.. I think I'm just going to stop using it since I can't count on it any longer to do what it's suppose to do..

  • Do you have the case ID for your support call? The tech was wrong in that Express backup is indeed still an option when you click start backup from within OneCare.

OneCare can continue an older backup set if you have not done one of the following:

    1. reinstalled

    2. changed the backup plan settings for any reason - new destination, for example

    3. ran the database reset tool to resolve another issue.

  • Steve, as I said before I haven't 'done' anything to change OCare.. It's been set to run every 4 weeks on Sat. at 12 AM ever since I bought the computer almost 2 years ago now.. I've never changed it or had any reason to change it.. The tune-ups have all been fine and the only thing I've physically done is the 'express' back-up.. I'm not sure what you mean by 'ran the database reset tool to resolve another issue'.. I've had no other issues except for this one, so no, don't believe I've ran any database reset tool.. The 'express' button is simply not there anymore and it's insisting on doing a 'full' backup.. Thanks

  • I too am at my wits end!

Similar problem with that same Windows Update - except it fried my computer.

Used my recovery disks, reloaded Windows One Care - THERE IS NO MENTION OF RECOVER WHEN YOU REINSTALL

This has been the bane of my existence for about 3 days now.

I JUST read this on another subject in this forum -

"In some cases the initial attempt to access the old backup will fail. The typical method to fix this is to start a new small backup from the 'new' PC of just a few files. This will connect the new PC to the old drive and allow it to 'see' the old backup already in place. Then, the restore process is basically the same as I already mentioned, though you may prefer to simply restore all files in such a case."

This statement should be in the reinstall of OneCare or readily available.

When you first install - there is only backup, no mentiion AT ALL of restore.

I am an intermediate user - this program should be much simpler to use - and I really resent the attitude of some of the moderators on here suggesting WE MUST HAVE DONE SOMETHING

I for one would like the option to actually see my backups even if 2 different types of backups are performed.

Don't treat us like children - "you can be your own worst enemy" MS is already performing that service.

I am extremely disappointed - this program has been a complete waste of my time and money - my subscription runs out in 15 days - and that will be that.

Unfortunately MS you didn't come through for me when I needed you the most!

  • Yes Rick, I'm with you there.. I guess they have to blame someone for the problems we're having since to put the blame where it belongs, right with MS, goes against their grain.. I know I never touched my computer or did anything to cause this problem and maybe that tech in India was correct when he said it was a MS update the created the erasure of the 'express' option, I don't know, I just know it's gone.. Personally, I'm just chucking the back-up problem onto the back burner for now until I can afford to purchase a stand alone program to do the job, it's just too bad MS doesn't have the cajones to come forward and admit THEY made another one of their awesome mistakes, not us, the users.. If I ever have the money I'm going to go to a MAC.. If they weren't so expensive I'd would have bought ones years ago.. Everyone I know that uses one swears by them.. Well, here's hoping MS gets THIS problem fixed sometime in the near future..

  • I'm still mystified by your problem, as I've taken all of the latest updates on multiple PCs with Vista and XP, all with OneCare and none of my OneCare options has changed. I still do not agree with the tech's answer to you.

Note, also, that the moderators here are not Microsoft employees, we are customers like you, volunteering our time to help out when we can.

I will agree that backup in OneCare is flaky, which is why I don't use it much.

  • Rick1953, are you still having a problem accessing your old backups to perform a restore?
