remote access problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a problem with remote access.
When I used the trian version of WHS everything worked great, but then when I purchased thinks went wrong. I could not input seral number and had to re-install WHS with a clean install.
With the trial version I managed to use remote access as it should, but now I can not.
It will not let me configure the domain name I have tried the original and made a new, but keep getting error as so as I enter the Live ID (I have even tried two Live IDs).
I can connect to the server if I input the IP adress direct, and see shared folder but when I but http://<domainname>.homeserver.com I get nothing (even tried https:). So I can connect from a remote place so it is either a problem with my live ID or somthing with the server? (I can log in to Live from other places, but not with WHS). Any ideas??
    Thanks

  • Hi,
Thanks for the responses, have sorted it. And yes it was simple to fix :-(

The time was correct on the WHS but the date was wrong, 2 months out. I just looked at the time at the bottom and hadnt checked the date. After I fixed this everything has worked perfect.
Was having problems with the vista machine seeing the shared folder, but just re-installed the connect software. It is working so well, took some time, but worth it.
Even got it working as a ftp with filezilla :-)
I do have a little nagging type thing that I would like to change, would like to get my old domain back and use that rather than the new one I have. It says domain already taken (which it is by me). The one I put in is a bit long. I have to live ids, one with the domain now and an other with the old. Is it possible to get it back?

Once again thanks for the help

  • Check your domain name.  It might be different than you think.  Go to settings, remote access.  The domain should be listed there.

The domain name is http://<domainname>.<name.of.the.server>.com.  If you named your domain "bob123" and server "server1", it would be http://bob123.server1.com

    Hope this helps

    Not correct, I'm afraid.

Assuming you are using the domain Microsoft provides, your FQDN will be <vanity_name>.homeserver.com, so for example "bob123.homeserver.com". If you have an OEM server, the OEM has made an arrangement with another dynamic DNS provider, and you're taking advantage of that, you'll probably have a similar naming convention. You'll have to look in the console where Jeff has pointed you, and/or consult your product documentation, for specifics in that case.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • If you can connect to server using IP address, this indicate you haven't set up your domain successfully. What does the domain wizard tell you when it blocks you to configure your domain name?

Can you try the following steps? 1. enter domain wizard. 2. create a new domain name. 3. enter a new domain name and submit.  4. wait for half an hour and try to access the server using that domain name  http://<domainname>.homeserver.com. Also, you can know whether your domain name has been created by using nslookup in cmd.(Steps are: 1. start->run 2. type nslookup. 3. type your domain name. if your domain has been created, you should be able to see the IP address. However, this is not 100% true)

    Thanks,

  • Hi, Derek

Yes, this is possible to get back, if you remeber the credential for your old live id. Create a new domain use that live ID, you'll be able to choose that registered domain name to configure the box.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Mike,

Thanks Mike will try that when I get back off my Hols.
Another quick question,My WHS shuts down after 1 or 2 days, and I have to reboot? Not fun, as even thou I am Holiday would like to back up my photos over the net, and dont want to have to go down and restart the server everytime I am lucky enough to get a Holiday.

    Derek

PS when I say go down and reboot, the server is at my office and not in the cellar...I am not that lazy ...honest
