Hey im sorry to bother you all but im out of time.

My situation is unique this is what happend to me.

I had vista on my pc when I bought it, it was an alienware computer, it came with setup discs (no windows vista disc) and a product key on the bottom of my laptop.  I didnt like vista because I couldnt use my nvidia sli.  So I paid 100 bucks and got xp on it and, well sli was available for vista and I put vista back on (this was 28 days ago) and I try to put my cd key in and it says your cd key is in use.  I don't want to lose all my data how can I tell microsoft that the cd key is not in use, b/c it was uninstalled and reinstalle?  I also dled that genuine thing and here it is.

  • Hello afi44,

The Product Key currently being used in Vista is the Default "Keyless Install" key. Vista is allowed to be installed without a Product key, but Vista still needs a Product Key, so it uses it's own Default Key (also known as the Keyless Install key). This key allows the user to use Vista for 30 days before they need to enter a Valid product key.

To resolve your issue, you first need to change the Product Key from the Default "Keyless Install" key to the Product Key (found on the sticker on the side of your computer) and then Activate by Phone.

    1) Click the Start button

    2) Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    3) Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    4) Click the Next button.

    5) You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    6) It will attempt to Activate by the internet and may return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 7)

    7) Click the Start button

    8) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    9) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone.

    11) Keep that window open while you call the Activation Call Center as you will need to read off some numbers that are only found in that window.

NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice that will try to Activate Vista for you. If the Automated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep, select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case, only thru the Live Activation Rep will your Activation be successful.

    Thank you,
