Logging into console fails 90% on first attempt RRS feed

  • Question

  • For at least the last 6 months, when I log into the console, it times out or fails at least 90% of the time, a second attempt will usually connect,  but not always.

Even when I do log in, it takes at least one minute

Did you ever upgrade the RAM on that?  (512 MB of RAM for WHS is barely enough to run just the OS.)

  • No,  I'm using it primarily for daily backup,  not for file sharing/videos/iTunes or any of the other perks. I got the impression that the default ram was fine, also I did not want to  void my warranty.

It's out of warranty and ram is cheap enough - so if it made the backups run faster  it would be worth it. The backup for this computer takes an hour each day. The other computers take only 10 minutes.

  • Hi,
could be, you are hit by a timeout caused by misconfigured name resolution (DNS).
Example: You could have configured an external DNS server - so each attempt to resolve the server name goes first to that DNS server. This attempt may take longer than the console software is patient, so it times out. At the second time the answer of the DNS server is already in the clients DNS cache - so it works now.
The same effect can be caused by a DNS Suffix.
Please post the output of the command
    ipconfig /all
on your client. (You can mark the text in the cmd window by clicking the system menu in the title bar, selecting Edit/Mark and hitting Enter after marking the text moves it to the clipboard, from where you can paste it to here.)

  • Yes, as expected - the DNS server is configured to 207.164.234.193 and 207.164.234.129, which is the DNS server of the ISP. Try to change that in the DHCP configuration of the router to the routers internal address 192.168.1.1.
After that reboot client and server and verify, if Internet connection still works and that the proper DNS server (the router) is now shown.

  • Upgrading RAM won't have a significant impact on backup performance.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
