Vista will only logon in safe mode, otherwise getting Error 0xc004e002 RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is a Dell laptop with Vista Home Professional as preinstalled by Dell. The owner has spent well >2 hrs with Dell tech support (before she gave up). Dell have been unable to solve the problem.

Logged 2 issues with Microsoft, first one SRX1128060791ID, but was unable to find it in my live profile so logged SRX 1128195470ID - which is linked to the profile. Both issues got automated responses saying to search the kb (which contains no relevant solutions) log the issue here, or call microsoft.

    I have tried the following:

    1. Chkdsk /f /r - made no difference.
    2. Booted to safe mode and ran slmgr /rilc but the latter failed with the error message "Permission Denied line 1634 Char 5 code 800A0046". The resolution from Darin Smith 18 issues down from this won't work because it expects to be running in normal mode. slsvc won't start in safe mode. If I try to logon in normal mode or safe mode with networking, the error message above comes up and then it just logs right back out.
    3. Vista won't let me reenter the license key in CPL - System in safe mode.
    4.
Ran MGADIAG.EXE which comes up with this:

Can someone please suggest how to resolve this seemingly trivial problem without having to reinstall Vista?

  • Problem sorted using Darin Smiths method.

What wasn't clear in his description is that the Internet Explorer window can actually be started from the 0xC004E002 error prompt by clicking the help link and then continuing with the link looking for online help.  This way, CMD.EXE runs in normal mode, slsvc works and slmgr doesn't error out.

    Thanks Darin
