Possible fix for SyncToy crashes with large (>100GB) syncs RRS feed

  • Question

  • SyncToy 2.0 kept crashing on me when trying to sync up a 130 GB partition.

Turns out my new 1 TB hard drive (external usb Fantom Green Drive) conserves power by entering a hardware enabled (not windows monitored) sleep mode after a few minute of inactivity; with platter spindown and all. Apparently, the 5 sec wakeup time is too long for SyncToy which crashes once the action list is generated (takes about 30-40 mins) and copying is initiated.

Fix:  keep the hard drive awake.  I just opened a folder in it ever now and again until the file I/O sync began.  Better yet just open an MS word doc and save it to the sleepy hard disk. MS should kept the drive online with its auto file saves every few minutes.

    Hope this helps out,

BTW was running x64 SyncToys on XP Pro

  • I think this may have been my problem with Synctoy 2.0 beta and 2.0 final on a couple of 1TB bookworld nas drives.  They locked up every time.  I found Synctoy 2.0 beta and 2.0 final useless.  I just went back to 1.4 which works great.  MS has made 1.4 unavailable for download but you can find it if you look hard enough.
