WGA Startup Error! RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is everything that I have right now about the WGA.
I've had my HP computer since summer '05, and I've passed the WGA test before..
Now I start my PC up and I'm getting a Genuine Windows logo in the corner and a pop up saying it's not a genuine copy of windows and has a counter before I can continue to start up..

Using the Windows Genuine Advantage Check I got the code:
    DJ65RV6
(The program is from August 26th)
I got it while trying to download one of those microsoft programs that ask for Genuine check before download.
I passed then, but now I'm getting this error when I start up my PC saying that I don't have a valid Genuine Copy of Windows. and that I'll be getting this message everytime I start up.. blah blah, blah.

I called Customer Support at ~9:30am Oct 16th 2006, and a nice lady named Michelle helped point me to www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/support.aspx
where I ran the diagnostic with results below.

    What's going on?

Now by going to the genuine/download/validation site, I am getting,
    Validation Complete!

Thank you for validating your copy of Microsoft Windows.

Thank you for using the Windows Genuine Advantage program. You may now access resources for genuine Windows users.

I'm writing this documenting my problems..

I'll try to restart my PC one more time to see if whatever I've done resolved the problem...

    Nope..
    Same message.
Before I restarted, I ran the diag and it said Genuine... I didn't copy the results down, though...

I ran the diag again, at 10:30am.

it says genuine, but when I restarted, it says not...
Make up your mind Microsoft Genuine Check! Am I genuine or not?

I got my PC NEW at BestBuy last summer.
As I've said, (I have repeted myself.. sorry.) I passed the check before..

I hope this is enough info to help fix my problem.
I'm also sorry for the fact that I sound like an idiot..
I am writing this too fast and am kind of disgruntled..
I'm not happy with the WGA...

Thanks for any help you can provide.

From the looks of it, other people in this forum have had similar problems as me.

  • Setphen,

Alright, here is what I would like you to try. go into your Windows/System32 directory and find a file called "LegitCheckControl.dll" Delete that file, Restart. Then go to

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/validate.aspx

and Validate at the page above. After you are done with that, click Start then run and finally type in wgatray.exe /b. Re- run the diag tool and lets see if it will STAY genuine this time.

  • Stephen,

OK. I think you may have solved it on your own, but lets try this one more time (I do apologize) go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click "validate." Restart the computer. Re-run the diagnostics tool and post the results here and let us know if the notifications have went away.

    Thanks,

  • I thought I had solved my own problem too..
But when I restarted, i got the same "this may be counterfeit" thing...
The last diag I provided was taken after that message..

    I'm getting conflicting reports..
after my PC is up, it shows as genuine, but during start-up is accuses me of being a fake.

  • So this should help with my startup WGA failure and continue to keep my after-startup pass?

I'll try that and have an answer within 20 minutes (that gives me plenty of time :) )

(EDIT: And my computer won't miss the file? You sure it's safe? I'm going to do it, but I'm going to blame you for any problems that occur :)jk...)

  • well, it all went smooth, no error on start-up..
I ran the validation and it passed...
but it all went sour when I did the wgatray.exe/b in the cmd prompt..
the stupid WGA star popped up again saying "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting"

    great.

    now what?
The diag came out like this:

    same thing?
what did you do to me :)
kidding... I guess I'm making bad jokes when I'm this stressed out..
I'll try to restart my PC one last time to check to make sure the annoying startup thing is gone (it was this time..)
    Tuesday, October 17, 2006 12:27 AM
  • nope. the annoying startup genuine check came back..
    Why me?
I know I have a genuine copy of windows..
maybe it is a problem on microsoft's side? (It's been known to happen... ) (kidding! I like microscopic)

  • Ok. You don't have to worry about me anymore..
I'm still having sporadic problems, for who knows why, but I'm sure that EVENTUALLY microsoft will fix it... it is probably a problem with their systems..
I know how to temp-fix it for next time.... thanks..
(Very annoying since I know I am using genuine Win XP)

  • Stephen:

The error is on your machine - if you look above, you have an error code that the validation controls are not installed correctly (well, actually do not exist as the error is "Validation Control Not Installed")

I would recommend reinstalling the latest version of WGA Notifications here (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498) - this should get your system synced up with the latest version.

  • Thanks..
    That's another problem..
If you look at one of my earlier diags, it DOES list as the controls being installed.
I have Downloaded that, Just in case it will help, but those controls seem to randomly install or not...

    so..
Thanks again for trying, I'll let you know if that helped or not, but so far, it seems I was able to get rid of it already....
    Time will tell...

Before I even install that my Diag looks like:

    Really weird..
It decides when or when not it wants to be genuine..
As of right now, whatever was done seems to have worked...
I'm going to consider this "Problem Solved" because I haven't had any problems the last few times I have restarted..
    Thanks anyway, Phil.
