Can windows home server 2011 backup windows 2003 server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been been using WHS to backup some of my computers, one of which is window 2003 server.  I decided to try out WHS2011. But when I went to my 2003 server to run the WHS2011 connector, it says the OS is not supported?  Is this true?  Does this mean I am stuck with WHS?  For me I have tons of tapes stored using backup which is only in windows 2003 and XP.

      • Windows 7 Home Premium (x86 and x64)
      • Windows 7 Professional (x86 and x64)
      • Windows 7 Ultimate (x86 and x64)
      • Windows 7 Enterprise (x86 and x64)
      • Windows 7 Starter (x86)
    • The Windows Vista Operating System
      • Windows Vista Home Basic with Service Pack 2 (SP2) (x86 x64)
      • Windows Vista Home Premium with SP2 (x86 and x64)
      • Windows Vista Business with SP2 (x86 and x64)

      • Windows Vista Starter with SP2 (x86)
    • The Windows XP Operating System
      • Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3 (SP3)
      • Windows XP Professional with SP3
      • Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with SP3
    • Mac client computers
      • Mac OS X v10.5
      • Mac OS X v10.6

You could use a 3rd Party solution to back up files to your WHS2011 (e.g. SyncBack)

  • Guess I will just have to keep using WHS v1 since it backups w2003 just fine.

    Darn, thanks

Wonder why MS took it out?

You've really answered your own question.

As for your tapes, I'm not sure what you expect backing up your Windows Server 2003 installation to do for you. You would have to restore to very similar hardware to be able to access those tape backups. And you should bear in mind that tapes degrade slowly with age.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Ken, I use the backup program, which is in either windows 2003 or XP, to put onto tape all my video data, which I have maybe 30 terabyte of data.  We know the MS took out tape support in Vista/windows 7 thinking no one would be using anymore.  Maybe I will build up an XP system to try and use with the backup program to store my video.
