  • Can Live mesh print to the local printer? How?

  • Hi Partha,

Unfortunately printing through a remote connection is not currently supported in Live Mesh.  The only real workarounds are Richard's suggestion above, or perhaps taking a screen shot on the local machine and printing that.

Support for adding printers to the mesh is gaining some popularity as a customer feature request, though, and I've added your vote for that feature to our internal list.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Partha,
You'll need to elaborate a bit for the scenario you are thinking of.  Do you mean printing while using Live Remote to remote desktop into one of your other devices?  Or using the Live Desktop?

You can always download a file to the machine you are working on (either via Live Desktop or with the Live Mesh client) and print the document locally.

    Thanks,
    Richard

  • I mean printing to my local printer when I'm connected to my office computer. Let's say I open Internet explorer on my office machine remotely and want to print a web page on my local printer. How can I do that?

  • Add another vote to the tally - it's essential for those trying to replace GoToMyPC.

Is there a place where feature requests are listed?  Is there a place where the roadmap for Mesh is stated?

  • Hi HeyItsTodd,

I've added your vote (and vicwein's) for this feature to our internal list.  To answer your questions, though: We are using our Wish List sticky to track customer suggestions (don't worry about having to read through all 25 pages! If you have a suggestion, just add it in); We don't have a published road map for Live Mesh, but we'll be saying a lot more about it at PDC '08 in October - if you're interested you can get a glimpse of the sessions to come at: https://sessions.microsoftpdc.com/public/sessions.aspx.

    Hope that helps. :)

  • Another vote for local printing of remote files. I was a LogMeIn user (and still work with it occasionally), but I like Live Mesh better (and not just because it's free). But local printing would be a huge help.

  • If Live Mesh is going to equal (or best) gotomypc or logmein, local printing is a MUST!

  • I am going to have to go back to gotomypc. When I am paying someone to do some bookkeeping for me and she is using Quickbooks for example...the time it takes for her to print a report as a PDF, then email it to herself, then print it to her printer...I could pay for my monthly subscription.

Remote printing seems like a no-brainer.

I don't know why there would even be a question.

When you finally get it, I'll switch back. Until then I guess its...here's my money again gotomypc!!

  • If the remote machine is running a "Professional" version of Windows, you could connect to it via Remote Desktop.  As long as you install a printer driver on the remote machine that matches your default local printer, then anything you choose to print on the remote machine will be redirected to the local machine.

There are some configuration issues related to allowing the RDP protocol to pass through a remote router, if there is one; and the issue of dynamic IP addresses, but they are not that hard to solve.
