  • Question

  • I use WHS 2011 to play media files on both xbox 360 and PS3 and I've noticed that it takes FOREVER for my server to show up on those devices. I have media sharing enabled on a desktop machine and a laptop and both w7 machines show up instantly on my consoles. I know it's not a network issue because I also have playon installed on my server and that shows up instantly. It is only the regular media sharing on the server. Any ideas?

  • Looks like the problem was being caused by my failure to change the video streaming quality setting to something other than medium. Set to high and now everything is working better. Although it is strange because the instructions say to go by the Windows Experience Rating which doesn't exist in WHS.

Can you define "forever" a little more closely? Is that like "the 12th of never"? :)

Seriously, though, how long is it taking, and how much media of each type (how many files, approximately) do you have? It takes my server a few seconds to show up on my Xbox; I have a small number of video files, a large-ish number of audio (around .5 TB of Apple Lossless), and a fair volume of photos in a format that DLNA won't know anything about (DNG).

  • At least 5 minutes. I have a decent number of audio and video files maybe 4-500 GB. My point is that it's a noticeable amount of time. Never happened with v1. Does 2011 like re-index every time it connects?

Some amount of digging through indexes is required, but it shouldn't be re-indexing every time you connect, unless perhaps if you've turned off some services. In total, I probably have 5,000 or so files that can be streamed by Windows Home Server (the Apple Lossless can't, but AAC without DRM can be and I have some of that as well), and I don't think it takes over a few seconds to navigate around using the media library functionality on my XBox.
