"You need to format the disk in drive Z: before you can use it" problem on WHS v1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been getting the error message "You need to format the disk in drive Z: before you can use it" whenever I attempt to restore or view backups that are on my WHS v1 from either my Win 7 64-bit desktop or my Win 7 32-bit laptop. Every time I try to load a backup I get the above error message at 81% of the restore.

Has anyone ever solved this problem?!? It appears that this as been going on for 2-3 years, at least!!, with no resolution. This is simply reprehensible on Microsofts part. A server that cannot restore backups is not a server, it is just another hard drive to drop files on for me!!

Can anyone please provide a definitive solution to this? Otherwise the Synology DS1513+ is going to be my new backup choice.

    Thank you!

  • Just don't format the "drive". This is what help in the console tells you.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • But it just is not possible to open the backup. I am told "Cannot mount the backup" and must cancel the restore attempt. Please advise.
