Recurring Problem: "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not Genuine"

Question
-
I've had my Toshiba Netbook with Windows 7 Starter for over a year with no problems. I bought it new on Amazon from "Amazon LLC." When this message appeared, I restarted my computer, and it wouldn't load my desktop after that. I could get to system restore, though, and that allowed me to access my desktop again.
This is where most of the similar threads I've read end, but now a few Windows updates later I've got the message again. Please please do I have real Windows?

Yes :)
Failing a repair install, there's the Nuclear option of a reformat/reinstall using the Recovery system. Check your manual for details, or the Tosh website.
Remember that this WILL delete all your data - so back up to external media first!

As far as I can tell - yes, your Windows is Genuine. The problem lies with the file integrity. This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Driverstry downloading and installing them from here -Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

I followed the link and tried to install the Rapid Storage Drivers, but twice got the incredibly helpful error message, "The setup program failed to install one or more device drivers. Setup will exit."Tuesday, April 17, 2012 3:41 PM

It may be the worng version for yur particular system.
Go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest set from there.

I downloaded the most recent one (http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=2861100&rpn=PLL50U&modelFilter=NB505-N508BN&selCategory=2756709&selFamily=2336267) And while installing got the message "An error occurred while registering one or more components." Do you think I should do system restore to a point before the "not genuine" message appeared and try to do the download from there, or does it not make a difference?

That's certainly worth a try.please post a new MGADiag report, whatever the results.

I did system restore to a few days before my problems began. Still got the "An error occurred while registering one or more components" message trying to install the Intel rapid storage drivers, but here's my MGADiag report from this point.

hi noel,
I first would like to apologize for posting here, but i am not very used to this site and forums and I thought this would be the easier way to find you. You helped me few days ago(10th Ap) with win 7 re activation thing... i dont know if u remember. Anyway, I have posted a new post or thread(not sure what to call it) here
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprosecurity/thread/33b7b438-12ff-4f8f-b11b-9f163579c821
and, I would like to ask for your help when u have some time. Also, could u please tell me how can I report (in writing) a reply from an MCC. And if so, how to go about it.
Again I am Really Sorry to be posting here I just didnt know how to get Reliable help. And how to post somewhere where u would read. I hope u are following this one. Thank u

No problem - I remember it (sorta, at least!)
You could try reporting MCC stuff to the global admin addy at mccgaATmicrosoftDOTcom (either brickbats or bouquets)
I've tagged your new thread so I see all updates on it - I'll get to read it when I have a minute.

OK - now we have to work out which file it's talking about, and why.
Please run CHKDSK and SFC scans -type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size
of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally
(possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on the Start button
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter keyWait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Post an MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Ouch! This implies that other services may also be impacted. It may be simpler to try a repair install than to fix the known problems (and possibly end up having to do a repair install anyhow). The major problem is going to be finding a 'clean' download for the Starter edition with SP1 - there is no retail version and so no official download location that I'm aware of.In view of that, I would recommend the nuclear option - a reformat/reinstall using the manufacturer's Recovery options. Check your manual for details.

Oof.
You're right, there's no retail version or legit download...my options are to buy Windows 7 home/office/whatever edition for $200 and install all or part of that, or send my computer to Toshiba for a $250-$350 repair, because only they have the rights to reinstall it. Seeing as I bought my little netbook for $300...This summer I may be choosing between a car and a mac.
You've been AMAZINGLY helpful. Any more ideas?Wednesday, April 18, 2012 4:58 PM -
Yes :)
Failing a repair install, there's the Nuclear option of a reformat/reinstall using the Recovery system. Check your manual for details, or the Tosh website.
Remember that this WILL delete all your data - so back up to external media first!

That looks fine now - the only eet rror messages are due to not having yet validate the system, or installed the WAT Update. That will come in due course :)
make sure that you do all the updates ASAP, and get an up-to-date Anti-Virus installed.
